WAEC: PDP Blames Aregbesola Over Osun’s Poor Performance by Omooba77: 5:24pm On Sep 24, 2014
The Peoples Democratic Party has blamed the education policy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola for the poor performance of Osun State students in the last May/June West African Examination Council. The Director of Media and Strategy of the PDP, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday. The opposition party claimed that the declining standard of education in the state under Aregbesola was due to the misplaced priority of the governor.Odeyemi said the state occupied ninth position in WAEC when the PDP was in powers while expressing concern that the state had slipped to 22nd position within four years of APC rule. The party said the state was gradually drifting towards a total collapse with the declining standard of education under the APC.He stated that the quick slide of the state from a respectable position it previously occupied to the abyss of mediocrity few years after had given the present administration out as the one with “much fuss and less focus.”The statement read, “The fact remains that the mess offshoot of AD governor of 1999-2003 has created in the same education sector between 2010 and 2014 has not only put future of many up and coming generation in the state in jeopardy, but is also an indication that Aregbesola would prefer raising more Okada riders than doctors, lawyers and other professionals.“Today, regardless of the huge media hype woven round the school reclassification programme of the present administration, through which public schools in the state were forcefully lumped and the initial over 2,000 public primary and secondary schools compressed to less than 200 primary, middle and secondary schools, the initiative remains counter productive as shown by the last WAEC result.“Our investigations also revealed that, going by the results of students that sat for the last WAEC in public schools in the state, Osun actually placed 30th among the 36 states in the country. We leave the informed people of Osun State to ponder on this development and join efforts to return the state to path of progress and prosperity.”However, the APC which rose to defend the education policy of Aregbesola administration said the administration had drastically improved education in the state. The party, which reacted through its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said the PDP was being mischievous with its criticism against the WAEC result.According to him, students from all the states of the Federation performed poorly in the last examination, saying singling out Osun for opprobrium was uncharitable. He said, “The PDP in Osun is simply simplistic. They are band of opportunists. Have they done comparative analysis of how the entire result throughout the Federation affects Osun? It is known even to illiterates in villages in Kaduna, Bayelsa or Bauchi that the last result was a national failure.“So the PDP should begin by asking its Federal authority where did things go wrong? To now come to Osun and be issuing a press statement is a cheap propaganda that will not fly.“As far as Osun State Government is concerned, if there is any area where it scored the highest mark in less than four years in office, it is in education and even the world recognises that. It is largely in education that Aregbesola puts Osun on the world map.“The feat that never happened before his arrival at Government House since the state was created 23 years ago.”

Although governor Rauf Aregbeshola is a performing governor, his performance in the education sector of the state is really poor. I hope he improves this second tenure.

Honestly I'm still bothered how the schools are lumped together;siting schools in different localities is part of development.I hope this policy will be reviewed.

Again, this post is apolitical.

The problem is simple. In the 1970's, Government took over a lot of schools because we had the money. We also kept on building up new schools. This happened in all the states , and Osun is no exception. As a result, the state govt in most states (correction, all states) does not have the money to adequately fund all schools (Does Lagos taking a $90m world bank loan for schools tell anyone something?)

Second, there is this idea that nursery schools are not needed. A lot of children in public schools just start primary one sans nursery school. So, we have a lot of children who have not been exposed to the basics expected to suddenly grasp the complex. Of course they can't...and thus the problem starts growing...until they are in SS3 and they cannot communicate in English.(And as a result fail WAEC).

To get a pass mark in WAEC...Osun has to sort out the primary schools, and the secondary schools. They also have to sort out the teachers. Because most of the people who teach have no business teaching...and have no means for continuing professional development. The problems are many...but not insurmountable.

Yes, they go through a lot of stress because the schools, bad as they are, represent their only chance of bettering their lives.

If you read my post correctly, you would see that I identify the problems...and even give a solution(CPD for teachers). You also need nursery schools. You also need better funding for schools....and that is where increased education budgeting comes in. You need better teacher training too, as well as an improvement in the quality of students who go for teacher training.

I guess if we can get beyond the politics....we can make things better.

Our state schools are bad. Let'swork for solutions, and not pretend they are good. And this is not a problem restricted to Osun state.
