Hello Nairalanders,
The rate at which school students fail in there exams is tremendously high. Who do you think we could blame for their poor performance? In WAEC, NECO and JAMB

during my time in the late 80's and early 90's,
*access to TV and other recreational activities were so limited. outing times were basically church bazaar, old cinema and trade fair (all annual event)
*My Nintendo game boy and bricks game were only released to me during holidays (in addition to attending intensive lessons during hols)
*I watched telly with my pop and most often the CRT TV was permanently tuned to CNN and NTA channel
*Novel and newspaper reading is a must, articles discussed.
*My books and scores were inspected after school everyday as i come home to meet my parents, latest 4pm, they were home from work
*I liked footie then but the epl and liga coverage and broadcast wasn't as it is now
*American, Indian movies and wrestling were the norm then but its only about once a week that I was allowed to watch.

Every other time was meant for reading, books, library, lesson, books, books, books, books, and i guess one is better for it today.

Such things are no longer enforceable, soccer, nba, home videos, cinema, Sony play station, digicam, lappy, fb etc. are the order of the day

I visited my friends home @ lekki, his 9 yr old boy has a flat screen telly mounted on his room wall with dual view decoder  shocked. The boy has enuff gadgets  in his room that will make my father think twice about locking out my siblings and I from his dusty living room when we were growing up cheesy

But the poser is this, the western world have all these we may consider as distractions to our society but their youths are coming up with innovations etc and are becoming millionaires and billionaires in their young age while here, they fail simple exams in their droves

As with everything else, unfortunately the exams borads are a money-spinning machine.
whether you have failed on your own or failed on purpose, the Koko is that you should make your way to the office
with your bribe handy.

Then tomorrow you will come on air on a nigerian tv (or even here) and miss your tenses like a dumb-head.
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by Mobinga: 4:05pm On Jan 05, 2011
You can't say the organisation, Ghanaians write the same exams and do better. The students are lazy.
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by Odunnu: 4:16pm On Jan 05, 2011
80% of the blame goes to the student.
Students dont want to read these days, they prefer signing up with on 'special centre' teacher who will always promise to either pair them with an intelligent student or school for the exam or supply answers to them. The student is now free by virtue of the promise and cash payment made to play away their time.
What do you expect? Failure!
Exam bodies are better organised now to fight malpractice
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by mikkyrazzy: 4:22pm On Jan 05, 2011
@ Mobinga, I support you. Y should Ghanians write the same exams and do better if not that we have problems in our system? Its not just the examination bodies. Some parents add up to the whole problem. The government too - a picture has been created whereby people no longer believe in education. Problems in education cuts across a lot.

It is not their fault. Blame the society.

These kids know that hardwork does not fetch you anything in our society.
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by dharmie(f): 4:45pm On Jan 05, 2011
Misplaced priorities on all fronts.                                                                                                                                                                         The values and principles of hard work is fast loosing its significance.(Too many celebrated rich and powerful individuals to have as role models).
And of course, their parents, families or family friends (who were hard working but suffered or are suffering because of the Nigerian system that don't work) subconsciously shuts their eyes and the result is what we see now.
Besides, even the teachers seem to have lost the zeal to impact knowledge.Teacher A's salary has not been paid (and its too small) her mind is on when ASUU, TUC,NLC, etc embarks on strike. Her landlord will increase the rent soon and her son has to school in RUN,

Am not surprised, the only book kids read nowadays is "Facebook" and with the advent of blackberry all they do is flirt on Blackberry messenger all day.
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by Nobody: 5:07pm On Jan 05, 2011
My Mom happens to be a teacher. I called her today to know she was doing and guess what? Another strike.

Blame the Ministry of Education for her ignoring the needs of teachers. Blame the teachers for taking it out on the kids. Blame the kids for being unserious and depending on cheating, but above all, blame the past generation for lack of foresight. These same generation of 'upright elders are the ones failing in government and other sectors of the nation.
The folks up there have failed to realize that times have changed and the way students learn nowadays is different from back then. Each time an elderly person is discusses the subject of moral decadence and the decaying educational values, the common phrase they utter is 'during our own time', well guess what, this is the kid's time and the only way to solve issues is to see from their perspective. 80 of Nigerian youths are not dullards!
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by mindthing: 5:15pm On Jan 05, 2011
@Emmyk: Simply put, considering the abysmal grammatical attempt you just made (and it was the first post too!) im damn glad you didnt get that Credit, cos that would have shamed our already ludicrous grading system beyond measure. You need more tutelage from your dad, dude, hehe

Now to the issue, it is obviously the students' fault. Not blackberry. Not EPL. And definitely not the examination bodies. This is merely a matter of standards and reasoning, and a good pointer is that not only Nigerian students take these exams, but they put up the most dismal performances. Nigerian students should read more and sleep/play less. End of story.

The system has a share of the blame, so do the students. It would be irrational to heap it all on just one side. While the latter refuses to put in much effort, the former is willing to tolerate or excuse indolence, as long as a price is paid. The family has a role to play too. Parents should supervise their kids' study and how they make use of their time, help them with study tips.
There's no way 80% could have failed that exam if they had studied duly.
Were they taught what they were asked? If Yes, did they answer correctly?
It's one think to think one has done well . . . .It's another thing to have actually done well.
Re: Who Is To Be Blame For Student's Poor Performance? by VALIDATOR: 5:26pm On Jan 05, 2011
The kids are not performing well because they are intelligent enough to see that those who performed well yesterday are not recognized by the society today. Rather the society recognizes and respects those who made lots of money by hook or crook.

Honestly speaking, which do Nigerians respect more?A Local Government Chairman (who may have less than 5 credits at O Level) or a Professor? The kids are smart. They can see it and that reduces their zeal for academic pursuit.

1. Unqualified tutors.
2. Bad parenting.
3. Wasting quality time on Facebook.
4. Indulgence in unprofitable juvenile romance spun by pornographic music videos and movies.

Thanks. Students are too quick to draw the blame card.
My NGO works with recent graduates to better their chances of landing josb in the ever volatile job market.
Sad to see graduates who cannot string a CV together.

We offered free CV help and Interview techniques training via a post in the education section. Only two people responded.
Quite a number of students / graduates these days are "bum" lazy. Excuse my French

For every problem that affects man, it can be traced directly or indirectly to the family. That said, the society is like a conglomerate of different families. Education for instance can only be efficiently delivered to the taught if his immediate family he lives with gives some form of encouragement. Support in forms of paying school fees on time, the parents taking time to guide their children through the everyday learning and also psychological support i.e. helping the child conceive a positive mindset.

O levels or UTME or whatever exam has a standard in each of its subjects. It is not in believing that you have done your best and you very well expect to pass. How many Nigerian students take time to actually cover the syllabus. I don't subscribe to just studying because you are told. Find the interest and build on it

The teachers that are imposed on us as tutors are also not helping matters. I am not talking of 150,000 naira a term private school. Obviously, not many can afford that. You go to a so called public school and what do you see? The visible neglect of the government. Teachers who are deficient in their qualifications. For goodness sake, how can a college of education graduate who was forced to the school as a last resort deliver when the interest is not there. Education is now seen as a last resort of many ex-NYSC corps members who could not find befitting jobs.

The problem of bad grades is bigger than the students who become the victims. See the causes so visible. It is once said that Education is a slow way to make money. The youths of Nigeria may be misguided by believing in the get rich quick syndrome and trying to frolic in entertainment agents like TV, Video and PC games etc.

The government should try to increase the budget on education to something meaningful. No developed country abandons its education sector that is one reason, we would never get developed like this.
