new2020: A lot of Nigerians disregard Professor Iwu solely for his stewardship of INEC! Even with Jesus at INEC, there would be electoral fraud in Nigeria. Professor was well ahead of his peers in Ebola research. He is a well respected fellow and scholar in the field of Pharmacognosy and Pharmacy. Won numerous awards in US and UK....PRIOR TO BECOMING INEC CHAIRMAN.

Fashola said as much as reported by Vanguard

Maurice Iwu, who is a Professor of Pharmacognosy, was appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in June 2005, and was later removed from office in April 2010.

According to Fashola: “I was curious about what Professor Maurice Iwu was doing with elections if he was already researching on how Bitter Kola can cure some diseases.

“He should come back and do his work because really this is his core competence and if he is listening to me, I am challenging him that he will be able to reopen the frontiers of that research and present it, this organization will fund it.”

dont8: Good development from Lagos State Government once again, I wish other States can be proactive as this State.

The person called Akpabio would rather have used the money to pay for his pension.

Wasted generation, incapable of critical and strategic thinking!

What if Ebola is gone from Nigeria?
What happens if it comes back tomorrow?
You will start running from pillar to post again, drinking salt water, nano silver pesticide or begging America for Zapp?

Here is someone preparing for the future and you lot comes online to expose your ignorance?
Is it by force to post, if your cranium is empty?

Anyways, thanks to Fashola for the offer, I hereby challenge all our research virologists to take advantage of this offer and write their names on the marble of time and may I warn all the charlatans and the dubious practioners to steer clear!

akom0908: They should make better funding in reducing poverty...ebola is almost dead but poverty is still alive
Ebola is still very much kicking a$$ in our not distant neighbouring countries. We're not free yet.

Do you know that fatal diseases like Ebola and HIV are capable of spurring mass poverty as it reduces work efficiencies and effectiveness? In summary, widespread disease and poverty are correlated!

Good point. I couldn't understand the reason why INEC job has historically been given to scholarly people with degrees that has nothing to do with electoral conduct. From Dr. Abel Guobadia, one of Nigerian's finest Physicists, and now Prof. Jega.

Good direction, finally. But 5 million Naira for Ebola research is very ridiculous.

I thought Lagos State has a medical college. What is LASU supposed to be doing in medicine?

All these loud-mouthed politicians like to make news while a small lab in Canada is doing wonders on Ebola research. Must Fashola tell the whole world that he is ready to fund research in that direction?

What research fund has LASG made available to her own institution - LASU? Just lousy noise making for political popularity!

True, LASG has its own medical college but you cant specialise in all areas of medicine and thats why all over the world, different Universities are notable for different areas of medicine & by the way, a private University:- Redeemers University, Redemption Camp, contributed immensely to the fight against Ebola disease led by the much maligned Prof Tomori who was abused for playing scrabble during National Conference. The University has a lab that was used for Ebola Blood screening

Oga, LASU Medical School is probably the most equipped in Nigeria. It is actually well funded. But as with all serious research endeavour worldover, there is need for collaboration between various Research institutes, Schlools, Government, and Industries

Unna too like to dey engage in criticism without offering any way out. Very typical 'Black Man'

bros i disagree totally with you. Most times the guys who know the science n art of research are not the ones teaching in our institutions. The nigerian way has really affected many the academic sector. Merit is no longer the order of the day.
