31,000 people an hour are joining the social network Ello.
https://ello.co

The latest social network to hit the interweb and one that is generating more buzz than we have seen in quite some time is Ello. With an interface that screams minimalist and promoting it as a space where no advertising whatsoever is permitted, Ello is slowly catching on among the youth population in the Western world. It may be time to consider switching to Ello from Facebook and here’s ten reasons why.

#1 There’s no need to verify your name
The largest social networking site in the world, Facebook, recently announced that users that weren’t using their legal names would have their accounts suspended. This has caused backlash in the FB community as many are searching for a site to relocate to. Google+ would be a likely option though for all intents and purposes, its’ launch and management has been a complete failure. With Ello, you can sign up under whatever name you like. You’re free to create your profile under the name you want to be known as. If that’s a nickname, an avatar, or your real name – it doesn’t matter. Live it up.

#2 Ello mimics everything that Facebook does right and none of what it’s done wrong
Through Ello we’re working with a newsfeed, a profile page, and an IM feature. It is essentially a Facebook taken down to a very simple design that directs it towards the consumer and not to the corporations. It is very reminiscent of the early days of Facebook before the changes in privacy policy, the gathering of personal information, the copyright issues, and its’ recent bend towards Corporate America.

#3 No advertising
Ello is strict in its’ policy not to advertise on the network. There aren’t any ads anywhere. Just profiles and the opportunity to network – that’s it. There isn’t a social network out there that isn’t being boggled down by ads currently or that aren’t struggling to find a way to monetize to increase its’ brand value. Ello isn’t focused on its’ brand or monetization but is merely interested in serving the customer as best as it can as a social network.

#4 Leave a Facebook filled with people you simply don’t want to talk to
You know who your friends are. The majority of the people on your friends list you likely see less than once a year and those that you do get in touch with regularly, you got their phone number or more efficient ways of reaching out. Coming to Ello provides a fresh start where you have an opportunity to rebuild your social media presence the way you want to – keeping only the friends you want to keep and getting away from the ones that you don’t.

#5 There won’t be hours upon hours of wasted time scrolling through a newsfeed
Ello is a smaller social network that isn’t designed necessarily as a social hangout in the same vein as Facebook is. One can click away through Facebook for hours on end without ever accomplishing anything only to find that you’ve wasted an entire day watching T.V. and seeing what your friends were up to. Ello provides an interface where it’s easy to sign in, post, check out the newsfeed, and leave. It’s straightforward, simple, gets you in and out fast.

#6 Ello cares
On the flip side of that coin – Facebook doesn’t. Whenever there is a design change or a policy change, users are forced to approve by reading through a ten or twelve page document that doesn’t provide you with any way to opt out. For instance, in June 2014, Facebook announced that through its’ privacy policy it would be accessing all of your browser history in order to provide better targeted ads – there’s no way to opt out!

#7 Manage your personal life and don’t give away your personal information to corporations
Ello derives no revenue from advertisements and has banned them accordingly. They want you to keep your personal information to yourself and decide who you want to share it with.

#8 Ello supports an LGBT and equality for all agenda
With the recent announcement from Facebook that one has to remain with their legal name, it has been seen as a discriminatory move against the trans and drag queens of the LGBT community who, rightfully so, want the protection of their chosen names.

#9 100% not for profit network
Ello presently has no plans to monetize in any way that would compromise the reputation it is slowly earning as a network that isn’t out to exploit their database for profit. Ello is the social networking version of Wikipedia in that sense.

#10 No matter what they say Facebook isn’t too big to fail – remember MySpace?!
Whenever a product or service comes along that offers the audience more, the audience tends to listen and adjust their habits accordingly. MySpace was the biggest networking site a decade ago but they were dead-on-arrival when they began to monetize, incorporate advertisements, and change their design. That’s when Facebook came in with a more slick, easy to use design. We’re seeing Facebook beginning to make similar mistakes now and Ello may, in fact, turn out to be the social networking site that takes over.

The social networking landscape is filled with huge names such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. They all serve a unique purpose. Twitter is a 140-character tool to promote and share opinions. Instagram is where we post our photos. Tumblr is where we post our blogs. Facebook is where we post our personal profiles and is the most common database that we use. Ello has the opportunity to overtake enough of the market to challenge these competitors and for the reasons mentioned above, at the very least, it’s worth taking a look at.

Explore Ello for yourself. Create a profile, try out the interface, and see if it’s a movement you want to be a part of.

A long time ago it was Facebook that was the little guy. Now Ello is not only the little engine that could but it’s the network that very well could and, according to the views of many, a network that very well should.
What do you think? wink
rubbish
