The University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association has
called on the authorities of the National Youth Service
Corps to reduce the fee charged for the online registration
of prospective corps members.

The NYSC had announced a fee of N4, 000 for each fresh
enlistment into the scheme.

In a statement by the National President of the Uniport
alumni, Mr Sampson Ngerebara, and the National Secretary,
Mr. Chris Adokeme, the association wondered why
unemployed fresh graduates embarking on national service
should be made to pay so much money.

The association contended that if the money was to be
charged at all, a maximum of N1,000 should be adequate.
Part of the statement read, “While we commend the board
and management of the NYSC for their decision to save
corps members long distance travelling time back to their
schools and the directorate headquarters, we regard the
amount demanded for registration as excessive.

“Considering the country’s economic situation, a fee of N1,
000 should suffice for this purpose. We urge the authorities
of the NYSC not to visit the prospective corps members with
unnecessary hardship.”

The association also asked whether the NYSC would pay the
funds collected from the exercise into the Federation
Account in the spirit of accountability.

It regretted that critical stakeholders like the National
Association of Nigerian Students and the alumni
associations of institutions of higher learning to which
these corps members now belong were not consulted in
the process of taking such a fundamental decision, and
advised the NYSC to guard against such a lapse in future.
