Cliche. Haven't we heard this enough? How can a language be on the verge of extinction when it has over 30 million speakers, of which the children in Igboland still speak it? Is Igbo language spoken by only the old to be deemed endangered? This same doomsday news has been going on for decades now. There are other languages in Nigeria that are greatly endangered of which most of the children(the expected carriers of the language to transmit to future descendants) don't speak. Igbo language will only be deemed endangered if it were under such a situation but it is totally not under such situation. |

It might as well be extinct, since Igbo people like to treat it the same way Europeans treat Latin. 2 Likes |

I doubt if Igbo language will survive next 50 years. Presently most of my cousins and Igbo friends don't know how to speak Igbo let alone being fluent in it. The blame still goes to some of our parents who see Igbo as an inferior language. Infact in no distant time bulk Igbo population of southwest Nigeria will form a great part of furture yoruba kingdom, while Igbo's southeast will become a no mans land, thus leading extinction of anything Igbo.
