The Probelm Of Typecasting In Nollywood(1) by Nobody: 6:51pm On Oct 11, 2014
Nollywood is Growing ,scriptwise, picture quality, direction, acting, props, and other film making fields..However, the way actors are being typecasted in Nollywood movies seems irreversible and on the increase these days..
A particular actor is always playing a particular or very similar type of role in every movie..No diversion, No surprise, once you see the actor, you know the Kind of role he or she would play in the movie ??
The like of Jim iyke is always playing the bad boy, player, armed robber or gangstar..Olu Jacobs is always d King, father or father in law, Gentle jack is always the Bodyguard, Nkem owoh never gets to play a serious role,Guys are always fighting over Mercy Johnson and Tonto dikeh is always a prostitute or barren wife..
Patience ozokwor is always the evil doer ,Ngozi Ezeonu is always the girls Rich Mother,Omoni oboli is always the wife or wife sister and Yul Edochie is always returning from Lagos to the village,Chiwetalu agu is always a Chief and Aki and Pawpaw are always the Children...
We are tired of saying same actors in same roles, let them do something new....Let Jim iyke play a pastor,Jackie appiah a mad woman, INI Edo play a Lecturer.. This are the things that spice up a Movie and give Viewers that suspense they need..Nollywood I hope you work on this..

It doesn't happen only in Nollywood. Hollywood and Bollywood are guilty of this as well.

Leonardo Di Caprio dies at the end of almost all his films or he gets what's coming to him e.g Titanic, The Great Gatsby, Wolf of Wall street, etc.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Shwarzenneger - The one-men army that strolls into the enemy camp and kill all the bad guys without breaking much of a sweat e.g Rambo, True Lies, Eraser, Last Stand, Expendables, etc.

Angelina Jolie - The sexy, manipulative and even tempered heroine who can whoop any man's ass and executes any daredevil stunt perfectly. There is usually a male character who is tripping for and if he is lucky, I mean very lucky, she just might give him a chance, and then kill him later if he bleeps up e.g Tomb Raider, Salt, Original Sin, etc.

Denzel Washington - The excessively charismatic lead character who makes it a habit to outshine the rest of the cast with his awesomeness. All his films have subtle underlying similarities seemingly suited to display his awesomeness. He is always articulate, ambitious, and fearless. He might kill you in cold blood if you rub him up the wrong way e.g The Book Of Eli, Training Day, American Gangster, The Debaters, etc.

Jackie Chan - The unassuming and ordinary guy next door who originally seems to have nothing to do with the plot until he accidentally crosses paths with the antagonists and is suddenly deep in waaaaay over his head and would have to fight his way out. Comically, of course e.g Mr Nice Guy, Armour Of God, Drunken Master, Spy Next Door, etc.

So you can see it happens in every industry. Only few actors are able to wriggle out of being typecast and display their versatility e.g Brad Pitt (Troy, Mr and Mrs Smith, Snatch, etc), Ed Norton (Keeping The Faith, Hulk 2, Bourne Legacy), Majid Michel (This guy has a wide range though some of him movies dey fall hand sometimes), Nse Ikpe Etim, etc etc etc.

Phew! Long post!
