Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To Five Years In Prison by Orina(m): 10:35am On Oct 21, 2014
Pistorius is expected to be taken to Kgosi Mampuru II prison, formerly Pretoria Central.
It’s believed he will stay in the holding cell below the court until around 4pm South Africatime (3pm BST) before being moved by police convoy, along with other prisoners, to the jail.
A Pistorius family spokesman said his sister, Aimee Pistorius, has sent his washbag and phone down to him in the holding cell.
In evidence last week, Zach Modise, acting national head of correctional services, said Pistorius should be housed in a hospital wing, rather than the general section of the prison. He will have a health assessment within six hoursof admission to the prison. This includes assessment of social, psychological and spiritual needs, and caters for different vulnerabilities, Modise told the court. That assessment determines where the prisoner is placed.
Speaking on Sky News,Nathi Mncubeof the National Prosecuting Authority, says the state team is “busy studying the case law” to see if it can appeal.
This is not what we were hoping to achieve by the end of this trial … But it is not entirely up to us.
We accept that at some point somebody has to make a decision and we respect the decision the judge has made.
An “appetite” to appeal is not enough, he says: they must meet legal requirements for an appeal
He says the prosecutors “find solace” in the custodial sentence handed down.
People might not be happy with the outcome but at the end of the day that’s what justice is all about. We are hearing that the Pistorius family will give a press conference at midday South African time (11am BST)
As he (pastorius) left the court,Barry Steenkamp, father of Reeva, told reporters he was “very satisfied” with the sentence. Asked if it was sufficient, he appeared to reply: “Yes.”
