Human Hair: The New Gold Of The 21st Century by Thebusinessaim: 7:07pm On Oct 27, 2014
The`main function of the human hair originally was to prevent heat loss from a person’s head. But in recent time, we have seen people who have little of it weep, women especially. Billions are spent each year on its upkeep, and companies who produce hair products and the hair itself experience high turnovers.

In our world today, human hair or rather Brazilian hair signifies best examples of extravagant dressing and style, it’s like the icing on the cake, the last line of beautification for every outfit. And the price depends on type; be it ponytail or fringe and also depends on weight. The hair is also classed by type which in turn is named according to its functions like; top, extension, wig, wiglet, weave and closure.

How is this hair gotten? Two-thirds of the raw human hair used today come from India, others are from China, Europe. Human hair export from India is a Rs 2,500 business (about $400 million). China is a much bigger player, with hair exports of $5 billion. However, Indian hair is considered more suitable for Caucasian hair, and this has increased its acceptability. The hair comes from a ‘tonsure’ ceremony, over 10 million people in India tonsure their hair every year, they do so in exchange for their god’s blessings and fulfilled desires. According to them, their god likes hair.

85% of the Indian population have had their hair shaved at least twice in their lifetime in the religious ceremony. In the state of Andhra Pradesh in southeastern India is a cluster of seven hills. Perched atop one is 2,000 years ol Tirumala Venkateswara. With attendance three times that of the Vatican, Tirumala hosts nearly 20 million pilgrims a year. It is said to be the most visited religious site in the world.

During this ceremony, over 25,000 women each day mount the steps a building with about six hundred barbers. The women bend over as the barbers shave off their hair. This hair is auctioned to licensed peddlers; in 2011, Tirumala held several online auctions, in one day reaping $27 million. Peddlers sell the hair to exporters, who sell it to manufacturers, who process it and sell it to distributors, who sell it to salons, who attach it to the heads of millions of women.

According to Kishar Kumar, black market expert in an interview with comedian Chris Rock, the temple does not satisfy the hair market demand, people find other means to fulfill this demand. When a girl sleeps, her hair is cut without her permission, it is not a very important crime in India. He also says people loose their hairs at the Cinemas when they go to see movies, village women get paid a few coins for their hair. But there are more coercive means where gangs hunt down women for their hair and husbands force their wives to shave theirs.

Hair is more important than Gold. It is easier to buy 100 kilos of gold than 5 kilos of hair says Kumar. In India, hair is considered a vanity, and removing it is the ultimate act of self sacrifice. But this is not so in different parts of the world, in 1944 some French women who were accused of having intimate relations with German troops during the WWII Nazi occupation of France, had their heads shaved and were paraded in front of a jeering mob. These women weren’t injured because hair grows back. Yet this was seen as an ultimate act of torture and humiliation. It is an evidence of the fact that hair is one of the seats of human dignity contrary to the belief of the Indians who see it as an extravagance and vanity.

Two types of hair are collected in India. One is Remy hair (the highest grade of human hair, a preferred choice for hairpieces and wigs because it creates a natural look) collected from temples The second kind is non-Remy hair – household waste collected by gypsy groups or nomads from villages.

In Africa, Nigeria especially, human hair rules, it is more significant than cake or pizza for the in-average Nigerian woman. The lowest price of human hair per pack of 12 inches is around 8,000 naira. So for a full hairstyle, you require two packs of hair at least. The inches range from 12 to 30 inches and the price can go up as high as 45-145,000 naira. And price depends on type; be it ponytail or fringe and also depends on weight. The hair is classed by type which in turn is named according to its functions like; top, extension wig, wiglet, weave and closure.

In America, as a commercial item, human hair is as significant as bananas. In 2011, the U.S. brought in over $1.8 billion worth of fresh bananas. During the same 12 months, around $1.3 million of raw human hair entered as well. In same 2011, a U.S. beauty salon was robbed of human hair worth $230,000. The thieves overed flat-screen TVs and full cash registers in their quest. During one of these heists, a salon owner was killed. No question, in its own way, human hair is a booming commodity on the world market. As such, it faces a grim future according to theatatlanitc.

In 2009 £15m worth of treated human hair was imported into the UK, £10m worth of wigs, false beards, eyebrows and eyelashes made from the stuff were also imported. Those in the trade estimate the hair extension industry alone is worth £60.

Human hair is highly in demand, and its uses are diverse, according to BBC, it can be used to make an additive that is found in foods such as the dough for pizza crusts and bagels. Human hair is beautiful to wear and it’s so interesting to work with according to fashion designers. Hair clothes are becoming more popular, from hair pieces and hats, to whole outfits worth as much as £20,000.

This practice of Hindu pilgrims shaving their heads has created a multi-million dollar business that just won’t go away anytime soon. Global economic expansion is driving the biggest price increase human hair ever has ever experienced. The prices have soared to the horizon with the demand for human hair at an all time high and supply low.
