How healthy are you?
A key player in determining your state of health is your immune system. The immune system can be likened to the police station in your community. Like this security agency, the role of the immune system is to arrest vagabonds roaming the streets of the body.
A police station has police officers of varying rank and job descriptions, buildings such as a jail to keep criminals and processes such as finger printing for future referencing.

Similarly your immune system has police officers called "white cells" that patrol every nook and crany of your body in search of intruders. And unlike the police who may release the offender on bail, your immune officers take no prisoners. They kill intruders, fingerprinting them all the way and digesting them into many tiny pieces taking mugshots from all possible angles. No look alike of an earlier arrested intruder will walk the streets of your bloodstream. Too bad for identical twins!

Our security agencies are wont to complain of inadequate equipment and fire power. Your immune system laughs deliriously. Some immune cells are experts in the good old hand to hand combat, enveloping and suffocating aliens. Others are more subtle, injecting them with lethal toxins. Some are subtler still moving about in mufty. Try them and see how fast they metarmorphose into eaters of the dead. Others are more ingenious. They spray intruders with aromatizing and delicious fragrances throwing hungry bystanders into a feeding frenzy. No escaping them! Others have become consultants. Though they may seem not to be doing much, these are the guardians of the immune system and are responsible for ensuring that all things take place decently and by arrangement.

What happens when the immune system is undermined?
Well what happens when our security agencies are comatose? Boko Haram! Any microorganism with a name can just stroll in leisurely to wreck havoc. And like the foolish pickpocket that kills his victim these invaders do not worry about their own future. Disease and death are the only words in their limited vocabulary.

What can threaten the immune system and how can you assist your body's police station?

Poor sleep has been known to increase the level of stress hormones in your body thus stressing your immune cells. So get enough sleep usually 6 to 9 hours for an adult per day.

Exercise boosts your levels of feel good hormones thus encouraging your immune cells.

Diet play a major role too. Too much sugar in the bloodstream for example curbs your immune system while providing rich fodder for intruders to thrive on.

Fruits and vegetables excites your immune cells like a tip does a traffic policeman. Unlike the police who may favour a certain dull color of currency brightly colored fruits such as oranges, pineapples, berries, onions etc are pleasing to your immune cells.

Certain mushrooms such as relshi or miatake have been found to boost your immunity like a salary. With regards to relshi, Chinese royalty have utilized it to prolong the life of the emperors and their family for millenia.
