famous people who were/are HIV positive and
still made an impact on the world and
achieved their dream. Don’t be discouraged,
HIV & AIDS is not a death sentence.
1. Magic Johnson – one of basketball’s all-
time greats revealed his HIV status in
November 1991. He has dedicated himself to
HIV education and helping those living with
HIV through the Magic Johnson Foundation

2. Freddie Mercury - He was the lead singer of
Queen, which was one of the top-selling rock
bands. He tested positive to HIV in 1987 and
four years later died of AIDS-related
pneumonia.

3. Greg Louganis - is an Olympic diver who
won multiple gold medals in the
80′s. In 1988, the same year he won two gold
medals at the Seoul Olympics, he tested
positive. Having now lived with HIV for more
than 20 years, he has been a champion for
numerous HIV causes.

4. Fela Kuti - He became famous in the 1960s
and ‘70s as the inventor of “Afrobeat” music.
He was also very critical of oppressive
regimes, especially of the Nigerian military at
the time. He produced 50 albums, among
them his hit 1977 album Zombie. He claimed
not to believe in AIDS or condoms and died of
AIDS complications in 1997 in Lagos,Nigeria

5. Arthur Ashe - he won three Grand Slam
tennis titles and was the first African-
American selected for Davis Cup play in 1963.
He became the top tennis player in the world
while also creating the Association of Tennis
Professionals and raising awareness against
South African apartheid. Ashe found out that
he was HIV positive in 1988, probably due to
an earlier unsafe blood transfusion. He created
the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of
AIDS. Sadly, he died in 1993.

6. Eazy E – was a rap legend and co-founder
of the influential group N.W.A., along with Dr.
Dre and Ice Cube. Their album, Straight Outta
Compton, went double platinum in 1988. After
falling ill in 1995, he publicly acknowledged
having AIDS. He died a month after his
diagnosis at the age of 31.
His death influenced public awareness of HIV/
AIDS, particularly within the African-American
community.

7. Glenn Burke - The MLB baseball player was
the first professional baseball player that was
known publicly as openly gay. He died from
AIDS related causes in 1995

8. Dave Brindle - As a journalist, he was
Canada’s first TV personality to publicly
acknowledge that he was HIV positive.
