Why I'll Never Buy A Tokunbo Car Again by Nobody: 7:00pm On Nov 06, 2014 |
So I decided to buy a car...finally!!! (did somebody say congratulations? Thank you) I'd been saving towards that end, ever since I moved to Lagos started working, and experienced the horrible conditions of Lagos public transport system. I couldn't decide whether to go for a 'small' brand new car, or a 'bigger', fairly used (Tokunbo) car. Based on popular advice, I opted for a 'clean' (at least it looked clean to me) Tokunbo Honda Accord "Discussion Continues" from Nigeria Ports Authority (Tin Can Island), Apapa. However, I've spent a whole lot more than I bargained in fixing one stupid thing or the other in the car; from buying a new battery to replacing one of the fans, filter, wheel balancing & alignment, etc. The worst part is that I have not even driven my car; haven't even as much as touched the steering wheel of the car; I've been too busy lately, preparing for a professional exam. Only my cousin has been driving it for the past two weeks. I dont think I'll ever buy a fairly used car again, whether na Naija used, or UK used...if e like, make e be for moon wey dem use am. Next time, even if na Golf or Picanto my money reach, I'm buying brand new. Na God go judge all these oyibo people wey go buy brand new car, come use am for several years, then send am come Africa. Shey we dey forbid brand new cars for Naija? 51 Likes 6 Shares |

No point Edited Make me self catch my trips, I was only trying to make the OP know that his post had no moral lesson but never knew that I would be falling into this first to comment syndrome even though when i see people screaming first to comment am like " what's the big deal" I have been using style to wait for this day and never knew it would come to pass so fast and when I least expected it. This automatically means this week gonna be a blessed one and would come back to give my testimony. 93 Likes 3 Shares |

It's unfortunate you had a bad experience, but I can assure you that your story will be a shock to others who are enjoying their tokunbo or second hand cars. 111 Likes 2 Shares |

anytime you decide to buy a tokunbo car, always make a budget for the engine replacement. They are sold to you without a guarantee and are very problematic. 13 Likes 1 Share |

What exactly is the point of this post? You changed basic replaceable items in a car that cost next to nothing and that's a reason not to buy tokunbo cars? 98 Likes 3 Shares |

i dont agree with engine replacement for tokunbo cars.if u r replacing engine, will the engine b band new or tokunbo?my question for op did u go with a mechanic or someone who knws abt car?some dealer sell nigerian used as tokunbo cars which is common around part of the northern part of nigeria.ur car might b nigerian used.if you buy grade one tokunbo cars atleast u will drive it for 2years plus without major prblm.u cant compare kia with honda or toyota etc. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

I have my own sore experiance dear: even worse than urs. I bought a tokunbo toyota hiace 6Y from berger in Lagos. As i got to enugu, d axle was making noise. I had to buy a new axle for 35k. I had not started using it fully when d oil pump started showing danger which i had to replace with 30k. I had to buy tyres for 56k( 4 no ) as well cos FRSC have booked me before cos of it.. Its been asking for cash almost on daily basis. I don tire. 11 Likes 4 Shares |

I bought a brand new car in 2009. Apart from the brake pads that I changed at 25km and 50 km, I have not done anything else other than service. I don't have any mechanics number. Ooo I changed 4 tyres after 3 years Tokunbo is a risk and now with the ever closing gap between "clean" Tokunbo and brand new, I will advise anyone to choose brand new (personal experience ) 44 Likes 3 Shares |

I don't know how much parts and labor cost in Nigeria. But in US, things like battery, filter, fans, wheel balancing & alignment are very minor issues and don't cost much. In fact, all of those things can be replaced within an hour by a mechanic who has tools. So, it is usually a good idea to buy used cars and fix it yourself. I understand you, Mr. OP. Cars can be huge headaches. 16 Likes 1 Share |

DidiLove1: The 'etc' actually covers several other things. While I admit that they're pretty basic, they do not exactly cost "next to nothing". Na my small pocket dey feel the heat. 12 Likes 1 Share |

true talk brother,i bought a brand new volkswagen jetta in 2009 and used it for 4 good years before selling it to a friend of mine who is still enjoying it till date and he has never gone to a mechanic to fix anything except change oil and brake pads and it did not go to mechanic for the 4 years i used it,i bought a brand new kia soul last year and the car will clock 2 years this coming april and i have not worked anything on it apart from routine oil change,i never change brake pads sef, brand new car is the bomb wether kia or honda or toyota deor03: 12 Likes 2 Shares |

Which of the filters did u change. Battery may have gone depending on the last time it was replced. Fan is electrical and could go bad anytime on a 7 year old car. I am not saying tokunbo is better than new but those items you mentioned are not abnormal. Btw, what assurance do u have that the car is not a Niger used.'reparkaged' 2 Likes |
