WHEN TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS COLLIDE Please, kindly visit my blog at www.archudofasnuances. To read more of my work, and show some love. Have a good read. I’ll appreciate your thoughts. * * * * * * * * * * She stared at her coffee. It had already gone cold. She looked out the window of the café, at cars cruising past. This café had been their rendezvous point for their dates, for ten years. But now, she was alone, separated from her husband, Tay. Their love had gone stale. She almost could not understand how they had spiraled from lovers, to complete strangers, in just under a year. She looked at her coffee again. She usually liked it black. It’s rich smell had always brought to her, a sense of calm, but this time it didn’t. Her mind wandered back and forth, like a ping-pong game, on how she would tell him. They has been separated for two months now. She leaned back in the chair, and went back in time. Adaobi and Timi had been sweethearts since their sophomore year in UNN. Timilehin was the calm, laconic one. She, Adaobi, on the other hand, was hip, and outspoken. She was slim, with curves in the right places. She had caramel complexion, and a cherubic face to sum up her breathtaking beauty. She had become used to rejecting advances from male students, lecturers, high ranking university staff, and even security workers! They had first met at the NSLT building, after CHM 201 lectures, on a studgy afternoon. She tripped and fell, while coming down the stairs. Timi, reflexively stretched and caught her, mid air. He helped her to her feet. She faced him, and suddenly became shy. “Oh, Thank you.” A little fire had been ignited, deep down. “Oh, it’s nothing. You’re welcome ” He replied. She just stood there, her lips twitching erratically at the corners. He was taller than her, and dark skinned. He was as tall as he was thin, had small eyes, and sported a low cut. His jaws, too, we’re clean shaven. He had an aura of calmness around him – like someone who took life easily. “I’m Adaobi.” She blurted out. “My name is Timi Adeoye.” He remained calm. And for a split second, she resented him for his calmness. She had expected him to be overly enthusiastic – like the way other men were, when talking to her, trying too hard to impress her. “Oh, I’ll just call you Tay, if you won’t mind.” She replied, almost automatically, her cheeks flushed. She felt awkward. She was used to being hit on, not the other way around. But here she was, transfixed to the spot, trying to make little talk with a guy she’d just met. “oh, I don’t. I actually like the way it sounds. Tay.” She was enchanted by his calmness, his serene demeanour, by the shade of pink on his lower lip, that glowed when he talked. “well, I was just going to get an ice cream and head to freedom square to chill out. Mind joining me?” she felt strange. Did she just ask a guy out? Wowzers! “What are we going to be doing at freedom Square?” “Well, we’ll just have to find out, then eh?” And find out, they did. They talked till night fell, exchanged phone numbers, and called each other at the slightest excuse. They both felt like high school students. Both of them graduated with Second Class Upper Honours. She, in Microbiology, He, in Industrial Chemistry. Both got employed right after they graduated, and got married, after two years, much to the expectation of everyone. They had two beautiful kids together, A boy and a girl. Their lives seemed like a Disney fairy tale, for nine years, until… Well, until things fell apart. Meaningless arguments that snowballed into full blown quarrels. They stopped doing things for each other. Stopped flirting, stopped caring, stopped talking, and eventually stopped living together. Their friends were baffled, their parents too, even both of them. The love they had shared had been so pristine, so unspoiled, so unique. Now, here she was, thinking of how best to say “I want a divorce” without incurring collateral damage — so to speak. Of course she had to think about their children; and she was already 32. “Ma’am, you need anything else? “ The waiter jolted her out of her reverie. ” No” She paid for her coffee and left. She kept thinking about how Timi would react to her request for divorce, as she got into her car. Her mind was made up, she sighed finally. “I’m just going to do this and get it over with” she said as she drove to Timi’s flat at Hillview Street. * * * * * * * * * * Her fingers trembled as she tapped the knocker on the front door. “Tay, I need to talk to you.” Her plan had been to tell him that she wanted a divorce, as soon as she saw him. She didn’t understand, however, why she had said that instead. “You called me Tay.” He responded, calm — and surprised. She opened her mouth, and closed it. She just realized she had not called him Tay, since their problems started, almost a year ago. She did not know when she let “Tay” slip. She blushed, visibly embarrassed. She stared at him. He had become thinner, his face looked drained as he stared back at her, wistfully, like a child would, at a toy he could not have. She stood there for what seemed like eternity, willing the words to come out: “I want a divorce.” But they did not. It seemed as though her throat had closed up. They stared at each other, as seconds rolled into minutes. They both remained there for about half an hour, motionless, as memories came rushing back: of the good old days, of what they had shared, of what they had lost. Resolve evanesced, strength ebbed from her. She still loved him, and knew that he loved her as much. She continued staring at him, and for a second, felt he might not want back in. “I love you, Tay”, she found her voice. Those heavenly words. Adaobi’s eyelashes fluttered, her eyes stung with tears. Timi stood there, unflinching. She was saying the things he wanted to hear. He desperately wanted her back. But he didn’t say anything. He just stood there. Everything was calm, except for Demi Lovato’s In Case, playing softly on the home theatre system, from inside the house. The whole world stood still as he finally said these words, with tears in his eyes. “Till death do us part. “ Amadieabasi Udofa (ArchFreelancer) is a student of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Nigeria Nsukka.
