If you’re an entrepreneur in Nigeria considering whether or not to go into online business then you should grab your seat, stay glued to it and read this article word for word, digesting every detail till you’re satisfied and can share this knowledge with others even if you’re just woken up from sleep.

First though you must know that some Nigerian businesses are making it big online with retail sales.
According to a report by Philips Consulting, Nigerians spend N1.3 billion monthly purchasing items such as mobile phones, fashion items especially clothing, electronic gadgets (TV, cameras etc) and even automobiles mostly from the leading online retail outlets such as Jumia, Konga, dealdey and kaymu to name a few. The business is very lucrative because you don’t need to pay for shop space and the cost of distributing this items falls into the customer’s hands not yours. So there’s huge profit potential however it’s not all rosy because a few problems rare their heads in the cause of doing business such as;

#1 Potential Customers not trusting you enough
Customers are always afraid to pay money to someone they’ve never met and may never meet, as a result even when you have a genuine business with actual products to sell you’d still find it hard to make a sale because the person at the other end – the customer – isn’t willing to take a risk with his money.

How to deal with this problem? Simply put a physical and verifiable shop address that people can come to at any time. Display your shop interior and exterior especially if it’s located in a shopping mall. If you sell from home it may not be advisable to put your private residence online for the public to see for security reasons. Also let the customer know the faces behind the business. Who is who and what do they do? This will considerably put the customer at ease.

#2 High delivery costs
If the customer has to pay heavily to have his/her item delivered to him/her it may make buying from you not worth the trouble. How can a customer pay as much as N8,000 to have an item that costs N50,000 delivered to him? Unless that product is hard to come by chances are that the customer would simply walk into a regular shop to pick it up instead of buying from you.

How to deal with this problem: Some smart shop owners do deliveries only within specific cities with good transport infrastructure and sizeable markets. So instead of offering nationwide delivery only focus on a few cities that have good transport systems and plenty of potential customers such as Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt.
