Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- As many as 80 people were killed and 240 injured in India’s financial hub of Mumbai as gunmen armed with rifles and grenades stormed five-star hotels in the country’s first terrorist attack targeting foreigners.

“Mumbai is the New York of India and this is a clear attack on Westerners,” said Clive Williams, a terrorism specialist at the Australian National University. “The targeting of British and Americans means there is a new modus operandi.”

Fire spread through the luxury Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, where terrorists were holding as many as 15 people hostage, the Press Trust of India reported. Army commandos were trying to flush gunmen from the Taj and two other luxury hotels, the Oberoi and Trident.

Targeting foreign nationals at key tourist hotels and restaurants adds a new dimension to a wave of bombings in India this year that has killed more than 300 people. A little known Islamist group called the Deccan Mujahadeen claimed responsibility for the attacks that began late yesterday, PTI said.

Multiple attacks have rocked India’s cities this year with bombs planted in markets, theaters and near mosques.

‘Sheer Chaos’

“It was sheer chaos,” said Manuela Testolini, a Canadian businesswoman who was dining at the Oberoi when gunmen burst in hunting for foreign nationals. “Every time we heard gunshots they were right behind us,” Testolini, who escaped through the kitchen with guests and hotel workers, told CNN television.

Militants remain in control of the Taj, in the heart of Mumbai’s Colaba tourist district, and the Oberoi and Trident, which are adjacent to each other in the financial district of Nariman Point, NDTV reported. Nine terrorists have been captured, five killed and three escaped, it said.

President-elect Barack Obama led global condemnation of the attacks as his transition team said the U.S. would work with “India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks.”

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for the attackers to be “brought to justice swiftly.”

The U.S. State Department said it wasn’t aware of any American casualties in the attacks “at this point.” Two Australians were among those injured, according to the government in Canberra. One Japanese citizen was killed and another injured, the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said.

Unilever Chief Executive Officer Patrick Cescau and members of the management team visiting the city are safe, the company said in e-mailed statements.

Explosions, Gunfire

The attacks, the worst in the city since train blasts in July 2006, began late yesterday with explosions and gunfire ringing out across the city. Shootings occurred outside Cafe Leopold, in the Colaba district of south Mumbai and at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, CNN-IBN television reported.

There was an explosion near a junction in Vile Parle, near the airport, where the remains of a taxicab were strewn across the road. Another explosion in a taxi was reported at Mazgaon dockyard road, according to PTI.

Pardon my ignorance dear. But growing up on the islands, the closet I got to any such thing was in Trinidad with Abu BAka and his crew of wannabe muslims staged an unsuccessful coup. it is indeed terrible. this post ought to be in the foreign section. the timing is very auspicious considering the recent profiling of India as an emerging super economy in the wake of the global economic meltdown, its week long programme on cnn, 'INDIA MEANS BUSINESS' is still running. finally these guys are Islamic fundamentalists, i am a Christian and there isn't anywhere in the koran where the sought of barbaric act is encouraged, the guys a different modus operandi, mendacious mullahs for example afghanistan's previous taliban regime sposored state terrorism, just the like the somali islamists so don't get it all mixed up not all muslims are like this

The act is condemnable, that goes without saying.

Guys pls some of this comments are very offending to a persons religion. There are terrorist everywhere . In India there are hindu terrorist who destroyed a mousque bulit about 700 years ago, there are hindu terrorist who killed innocent muslims in Kashmir.

In the UK the IRA were a catholic sect and they were nothing but terrorist who terrorised the whole of Englan in the 90's( I live in the UK). There are jewish terrorist who went into a mousque and killed dozens of muslims when the way praying. His name was Goldstein (if i am not mistaken). Actually, they're probably the worst at terrorism. They're amateurs compared to the likes of the Western terrorist organisations.
But lets get one thing straight shall we? The IRA was a money organisation that didn't "terrorise England in the 90s". It was an organisation that was more akin to a proper army rather than some backstabbing, innocent killing Islamic group. If you knew anything, you'd know the IRA gave warning before attacking any civilian target so that it could be evacuated.

But who cares? The IRA doesn't exist as a terrorist force, so why compare them to the asshole Islamists? I'd also remind you that the other huge, massive difference is that Islamic terrorists strike innocent civilians away from their own countries - something that other terrorist organisations never (or very, very rarely) do.

The point I am making is simple. It doesnt need to be personalised this thread is about the what happened in India if we personalise it  we should say whats my problem with india and not contribute to the thread. A soul is a soul whether its in Colombia where the FARC rebels terrorises and kidnappes innocent westerners or if its a soul killed by ETA separatist in spain. A human soul killed is the same everywhere and when an innocent person is killed unjustly it is wrong.

After 9/11 and btw then and now about 33000 amrican citizens converted to Islam. No. Hitler was a white man.
And what happened?
Other white men took him down. And until he was taken down, every German was a target.

Stop living in cloud-cuckoo land. The fact is that Islamic extremists hate you and want you to either convert or die. The moderate Muslims are either too scared, too dumb, too lazy or just plain don't care, so they won't target the extremism in their religion or try to stamp it out. At the very least, they're guilty of complicity.

That's got utterly zero to do with a "hate message". It's just a plain fact. Eat it up.
