Its rather unfortunate that the same society that made some men jobless at 45 still rejects them at every slight opportunity. 1 Like |

Dont include your age in your CV, i heard its not even mandatory. If you are eventually called for an interview at least you will get a chance to convince the HR if he thinks age might be a problem, but i personally wont be looking for employment at that age... to each his own anyway. 1 Like |

silvermania: With his wealth of experience, he must not necessarily become an employer of labour. Do you know how much value he can add to a start-up, or how he can help improve an already established firm? Secondly, what makes you think organizations want younger employees? And if you're so sure, how come we have so many fresh graduates still unemployed? Op perhaps your industry is the problem, not so much your age. Have you considered this? 1 Like |

Dear, I have gone through so many comments made by the young ones in this forum. None is given you the hope or tell the truth. Please, I advise you not to lose hope. The problem of Nigeria today, not moving forward is the idea of indulging most of these young ones in the labor market. The problems in the bank is because of this young ones metalility. The problem in the oil sector today is because of this young one metality of employment. I had a brother who left Nigeria about 4yrs ago through Visa Lottery at the age of 45, he got a job with one of the ministries within 4 months. He was trained on the job. Today, he is still working under that ministry. It is only Nigeria that employer want to engage young ones (Cheap labour) into their sector just for the purpose of cheating. Not for the purpose of experience and maturity,Which is why, today, Nigeria remains where we are. Because of this, banks remain where there are. No reasonable and experience personel engaged in their services, instead looking for "Target without Good Business Idea" for the target. Go to oil sectior, full of young ones that are totally redundant. My dear, they are still hope. Keep on searching with your experience and age. It is a matter of short time. Adjust your CV to reflect your experience and possibly formulate some companies name whether existing or not. Nigeria today, few people are sincere with the information in their CV. Do the same to enhance your CV and defend it. You will be employ. I wish you best of luck. 1 Like |

I am gonna guess that most companies have realised that young people are more innovative than the older folk and to be frank, innovation is the way to succed in the 21st century buisness world. I personally believe that as one grows older one becomes less innovative and more rigid; since one is already used to doing the same thing over and over again. For me, experience could mean being accustomed to the trends of the past which are often irrelevant in the present except for technical and specialized disciplines. I would suggest that, in your next application, you de-emphasize your age and emphasize your achievements over time. I would also suggest you do Pro Bono volunteer work, they may not pay much but they offer a wealth of experience in a short time; and the experience gained therein would definately help in gaining a job. I wish you the very best and hope to read your testimony. Cheers |

Louislewis: No offence but falsifing information on your CV is a bad bad idea. The recruitment process in Nigeria is not what it used to be, HR folks now do background checks on people they hire, infact I heard there are companies that do just that. Falsification could bounce back and that would be embarassing |

ao765: You are definitely not an Igbo man, write proposals without mentioning your age and put like 10yrs experience, it doesn't matter if it's the wrong thing to do you will get rejected anyways. Go to the interview and blow their minds, that's your best chance. They would definitely still find out about the omission and your true age, just tell them you forgot. At least you did not lie. Tell them your true age if you get to the interview stage. If they think you are more than capable, they might just make an exception. 1 Like |

Nigeria needs more employers of labour and we should be creating Jobs instead of looking for one no matter how little we start with. |

Ur post makes a lot of assumptions that continue to hold us back as a nation. So if u are a recruiter and you have the power to hire this guy would u? What goes around come around and every day we age. The younger applicants have become domain defenders and want all the jobs even when the older job seekers with experience may do better. It's a war! The 45yrs and above obviously are discriminated against in Nigeria due to the deluge of younger and desperate applicants who are exploited by being engaged with lower pay. Underlying this trend is that such engaged applicant will not know too that in about 15 or more years time of this kind of job engagement, he would not have any savings enough to become an employer of labour as being opined here and at the same time accruing his age to the class of the poster. So rather than empathize they open their mouths to paint the poster in bad lights. But what is good for the geese is good for the gander. Is it not possible that an employee after so many years of work get an unfortunate dismissal for issues that could happen untimely and unknowingly? Such fate which then leaves the person without gratuity or severance packages and such other things could make one to be looking for job at this age, and they are so many of retired civil servants or retired military and police men in like manner. So friend you are not alone. Just keep searching, your efforts with God on your side something great will come your way. Nairaland is full of young unemployed guys and are here to disparage your views and you should not be downcast at all. Allow them to wallow in their self conceited arrogance and pride that will soon destroy them. 1 Like |

I hear you all o! Since my post just over a year ago, I have set up as self-employed trainer. However, work opportunities are limited due to economic downturn. When you try and be 'employer of labour' and no work coming in cos no one has money to spend or invest in personal training/development, what now? All this talk of business networking is just all talk and dreams, and not reality for most people. Things are very dry in this our Naija. Na wa o! |

Businesses should adjust to reality rather than otherwise. On quora, i read cases of career changers in their 50s and a sixty year old woman who wanted to take up computer programming. On hacker news, a 36 y.o was going to start learning programming and needed advice. One person told him of a professor who bagged the nobel prize in physics at age 80, he began the research that got him the prize at age 65! Truth is, its about looks. That's all. In some countries a guy goes to jail, gets released in middle life, goes to school gets a degree and still gets a job. In the movies, holly wood, despite its ill reputation and all, employs actors of all ages. Morgan freeman, robert duvall, ridley scott, arnold swazzeneger, al pacino, sylvester stallone are still acting. Guys in their 70s and 80s! The ceo of tracinda corp, was ceo until death. Died at 98! . It was his corporation, and he managed it . In contrast is 45 old! Hell, NO. On youtube, a 55 y.o homeless man with a phD was job hunting. I think he was an astrophysicist. |
