10. Tom Cruise

Having begun his acting career at the age of 19, Tom Cruise didn’t take long to climb the ranks to A-list status – he’s been one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for decades, and in 2012 was ranked as the highest paid actor in the industry, with over 20 of his movies grossing more than $200 million worldwide.
He’s shown himself to be a capable actor – if not necessarily a truly great one – in a number of films throughout his career, with performances in films like The Colour Of Money, Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut standing out from the crowd. It’s a shame, then, that for the most part his output has increasingly veered towards playing safe and familiar roles as generic, near-flawless action heroes.
Knight And Day, Jack Reacher, The Last Samurai, Oblivion and Edge Of Tomorrow are just a few examples of Cruise vehicles in which you could pretty much swap and change the characters from one to another without any real noticable changes being made. It would be nice to see some more variation, although with Mission: Impossible 5 coming up next it’s not going to happen any time soon.

9. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp started life out as something of a teen idol after his rise to fame in the TV series 21 Jump Street. It is to his credit that he managed to escape from the pretty boy trappings earlier in his career and branch out into more challenging roles.
To a greater degree than Tom Cruise, Depp’s earlier roles demonstrated a good sense of range and variety – from Joseph Pistone in Donnie Brasco to Hunter S. Thompson in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Depp tackled interesting characters with subtlety. Sadly, the other side to his career is perhaps best characterised by his frequent collaborations with Tim Burton in which his characters are brought to life by the costume and makeup department, on top of which Depp adds a quirky, over-the-top and ultimately one-dimensional performance. It’s a tendency which has come to dominate his later filmography.
With more Pirates Of The Caribbean on the way, along with another Alice In Wonderland collaboration, Depp doesn’t look as if he’s about to break the successful mould which has earned him so much money, which is a shame since he’s proven himself capable of delivering more understated performances in the past.

8. Robert Downey, Jr.

Another actor who made his name during the 1980s, Robert Downey Jr. showed huge potential during the time he spent associated with the Brat Pack and went on to justly earn himself an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Charlie Chaplin in 1992’s Chaplin.
His problems with alcohol and drugs from the mid-90s through to the early 2000s saw him out of action, but his return to cinema screens seemed to herald a second wind for the amiable star. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, A Scanner Darkly and Zodiac saw fine performances from Downey Jr. which unfortunately seemed to pave the way for a string of roles in which he seemed to play the same cool, calm and collected characters we’re most familiar with.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with doing the effortlessly cool thing, especially if you’re as good at it as Downey Jr., but there’s hardly a great deal of nuance between Iron Man/Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes – the latter might be a lot of fun to watch (however unlike Sherlock Holmes he may be to fans of the literature), but he’s hardly stretching himself out of his comfort zone.

7. Brad Pitt

Another Hollywood star who started his career young, Brad Pitt’s first real breakthrough performance came in 1991 with the release of Ridley Scott’s Thelma And Louise and has since seen the actor trying to break away from his “pretty boy” image on more than one occasion.
Pitt has certainly demonstrated in several movies that he is an actor capable of being more than just a pretty face – from his supporting role in 12 Monkeys as the psychologically damaged Jeffrey Goines to the airheaded personal trainer in the Coens’ Burn After Reading, his filmography certainly displays some range. Unfortunately it’s the chisel-jawed, smooth talking persona which tends to come out to play more often than not, while some deviations from this template – for instance his turn in Inglorious Basterds – impress only in an over-the-top, cartoonish manner.
From Mr. And Mrs. Smith to World War Z, Brad Pitt’s starring roles all too often fit into the same category as those chosen by Tom Cruise – they’re exactly the kind of movie these stars know will perform well at the box office, but hardly a stretch when it comes to challenging themselves as actors to move away from the on-screen heroics.

6. Adam Sandler

From beginning his career as a comedian with the Saturday Night Live gang, Adam Sandler has gone on to have one of the most lucrative careers in Hollywood with his films earning a combined gross of over $2 billion at the box office.
The question as to whether he has the talent to warrant these sums of money has been posed for many years – indeed, it’s hard to think of a single Adam Sandler vehicle in which his performance has stood out as anything other than the usual combination of mugging and shouting whilst telling crude and childish jokes. Only Punch-Drunk Love breaks the mould, and that’s perhaps in large part down to director Paul Thomas Anderson challenging Sandler to doing something different.
Even the executives at Sony are getting sick and tired of Sandler’s schtick, with the recent internal email leaks revealing the star as a shameless exploiter of his status in order to shower himself and his friends with lavish private jets and other extravagant perks whilst producing one mediocre movie after another. Sadly, audiences keep buying tickets for his films despite their deteriorating quality, so more terrible Sandler performances are inevitable.

5. Samuel L. Jackson

If there’s one thing that can be said about Samuel L. Jackson it’s that he’s nothing if not a hugely prolific actor. Since his career began he has appeared in over 100 movies earning more than $10 billion combined.
Best known for his motor-mouthed, wise cracking roles as epitomised in Pulp Fiction, Jackson carved out his niche early in his career and has frequently fallen back on these stereotypical roles a few times too many. Much in the same way an actor like John Wayne established an on-screen persona he could return to time and again, so too does Jackson mine the same territory in many of his performances – after so many it starts to look like he’s switching on the autopilot.
When given a chance to shine, Samuel L. Jackson has proven himself capable of rising above the typecast roles which are clearly his bread and butter – it’s a shame he doesn’t stretch himself more often, or at least playfully send up his image as with Snakes On A Plane.

4. Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling is exactly the kind of heartthrob actor Hollywood loves – after starting out as a child actor he hit the big time with the romantic drama The Notebook in 2004 and promptly won a string of Teen Choice Awards along with an MTV Movie Award.
Gosling’s looks are probably his best assets if his acting career is anything to go by – despite a reasonable performance in 2006’s Half Nelson as a junior high school teacher with a drug addiction Gosling has yet to truly stretch himself as an actor. Regarded by some as his finest performance, his role as a getaway driver in Drive perhaps best exemplified his appeal – stoic, furrow-browed and largely silent, he comes across more as a model posing for a photoshoot rather than an actor truly inhabiting an interesting character.
Still, he’d be hard pushed to deliver a performance more farcical than his role as Sgt. Jerry Wooters in Gangster Squad – verging on parody it was about as unintentionally hilarious as acting gets.

3. Ben Affleck

The initial reaction to the announcement that Ben Affleck is to take on the role of Batman in the upcoming Batman V Superman provides a fine example of just how overrated the actor is perceived in the eyes of many movie fans.
Affleck certainly isn’t a bad actor – he brought a great deal to his characters in his collaborations with Kevin Smith, particularly in Chasing Amy – but for the most part audiences can’t help but feel they’re just watching the star going through the motions. From Armageddon and Pearl Harbour through to Daredevil and Paycheck, there’s little in the way of variation in the manner in which he inhabits these roles. As for To The Wonder, Terrence Malick can only take so much blame for Affleck aimlessly wandering through each scene.
When it comes to Affleck behind the camera it’s a different story – while many actors who opt to tackle directing fall flat on their faces, Affleck has delivered solid movies such as The Town and Argo. They might not be masterpieces but they certainly demonstrate promise for great things in the future.

2. Sean Penn

These days, Sean Penn is probably as well known for his outspoken political views and activism as he is for his place in Hollywood – few other actors in the history of the industry have used their fame to quite the same degree to project themselves as a champion of a particular cause.
It’s fair to say that this over-earnest dedication to causes, imbued with a degree of pretentiousness, often comes over in Sean Penn’s on-screen personas. In movies such as Milk this is most obvious but other, less political titles, still often feature Penn acting with an overbearing sense of self-importance. Penn might have pushed himself into more challenging roles earlier in his career with films like Dead Man Walking, but it’s hard to think of anything in more recent years which demonstrates a desire to break through any performance boundaries.
Like Ryan Gosling, his turn as gangster Mickey Cohen in Gangster Squad verged on the parodic, suggesting that the truly interesting and dynamic performances are behind him.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

One of the ways in which great acting is measured is the depth to which they fully inhabit their roles to the point where the viewer isn’t looking at the actor but beyond their personality towards something else. Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hardy and Kevin Spacey are just three examples of actors who manage to transcend their own personality and take on a new persona which utterly convinces the audience.
As with the other actors on this list, Leonardo DiCaprio rarely achieves this separation from his own image into that of the character. While he’s certainly a good actor, his merits are similar to those of stars like Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp, predominantly inhabiting a certain kind of leading man which suits their image. DiCaprio certainly knows how to create an intense sense of urgency with his roles, but you can’t help but get the impression that there’s always a degree of Leo peeking out behind the character informing his vocal intonations and gesticulations.
Confident, assertive and larger than life, DiCaprio – like many other overrated stars featured on this list – is something of a victim of his own success, destined to play a certain type of role which plays to his familiar, well-worn star status.
