Do Yorubas Still Refuse To Marry Omo-igbos? by Nobody: 11:31pm On Dec 11, 2014 |
My aunt is married to a yoruba man and she is not rily happy becos of how she's been treated by her husband's ppl, doe day've been married for some years now. But wot shocked me most was when I heard my aunt's husband's younger sister say she can never marry an 'omo-igbo' and dat day all have been warned by dia family elders neva to try such again, dat her elder brother(my aunty's hubby), shd be d last one to bring an omo-igbo to d family for marriage. As in she said dis to my face, adding 'abi yoruba guys don finish for nigeria?', and she is just 25. Now dat really got me thinking. Do nigerians still have dis mentality? As in der still tribalism in our marriages today? D worst part of it is dat am currently seeing a yoruba girl, and she resemble wife material. But she is d first daughter and only daughter to her parents. She has oda siblings but all na boys. So I come day wonder weda dis whole omo-igbo ish go surface again when boys don ready to marry, abi make boys begin to day reason back-up plan just in case? Guys, pls wot do u think? Do yorubas still refuse to marry omo-igbos or is it dat my aunt just got into d wrong family? Me am worried oh. 1 Like |

You need to understand what you want n what her people want. What happened to your aunt may not apply to you. Questions you need to know: Do you want to create confusion for your kids? Do you feel at home when with her siblings? Do you understand the language? Marrying from another tribe requires lot of tolerance n if you don't have it, let that love clear from your eyes. 2 Likes |

It's not really a yoruba thing. It cuts across all tribes in Nigeria. Igbos say it all the time that they can't marry yoruba people too. Nothing new there. I once 'toasted' an igbo girl, and when it was time to give me her number she asked for my name, I told her. She mumbled something in igbo language tucked her phone away and that was that. One Nigeria indeed. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Timbuktou: So to marry from another tribe means backward-thinking family? You are wrong. There are lot of things involved to make a marriage work even if you are from the same tribe. Tolerance is a virtue. Now, when the difference is obvious, you will need it a lot. |

It depends on the family . . .Some wont even let you marry out of their own town or state. But most importantly the marriage and where it is going depends on the people in the marriage. 1 Like |

obongproff:Bantu is a language classification and my tribe is just ONE of the MANY Bantu languages here in Kenya. Not all Bantu tribes act alike, but most men from my tribe have a pre-colonial set-up, bush, neanderthal, primitive, caveman-with-an-axe, Flintstones mentality. So, when someone says that you require tolerance to accommodate a spouse from another tribe, I just laugh. With me, the tolerance would have to be applied to men from my own tribe. |

obongproff: Why dont you want to marry from your own tribe, ie why are you intent on marrying yoruba in particular? And why, if you must marry yoruba, dont you go for the ones who are also into intertribal relationships like yourself? |
