The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has discovered 144 illegal entry points into the country.

Consequently, there is need to increase the number of its men to reduce the increasing number of immigrants trooping into the country.

The Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr. David Parradang who stated this during the Passing Out Parade (POP) ceremony of the second batch of border patrol corps officers and men said the 500 men were trained specifically on border patrol to man the nation’s borders against illegal entry into the country.

The Comptroller General charged the new officers to man their duty post effectively saying NIS won’t accept extortion from them.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Governor, Dr Mukhtar Ramalan Yero said the graduation of the 500 officers to man the nation’s border will go along way to help tackle the issue of porous border and the Boko Haram insurgency currently faced by the country.

Represented by his Head of Service, Mr. Habila Dogo, Governor Yero however charged the graduands to utilize the skills they have acquired from the training and put into practice while on the field.

Why wont there be hundreds of illegal entry points when corruption and nepotism is a norm in the immigration recruitment process. Those who are supposed to be there are not recruited. Rather, lazy children of the elite and well connected figures are being recruited. this is just the beginning.
If they can only discover 144 illegal entry points in the whole of Nigeria, it means they are yet to wake up from slumber, because within a town or village, there are hundreds of such, not to talk about a whole state, then the entire country. You can only find immigration staff on the main road.

They will all be classified as one point since they are all located within a narrow sector. 'Point' here is not defined by track, path, road or 'hole in the wall', but a specific operational sector.

I passed one of the illegal routes around 2002. I will never. Forget the images!!

144 is just 15% of the "smuggle route" they feel they should expose to us. There are almost 800leakages and more than 400routes in our border all over. Not to talk of the tunnels and what goes through them.

500men is too few a number. And how about the fence that can combat this?

Does it really matter where the points are? The irony is that Seme border where the country loses massive custom duty income due to smuggling isn't in the north, is it? We have to outgrow this closed mind mentality of region, religion and tribe to progress.
