JigsawKillah:

You see, these devices are best illustrated than described. Let's analyze a short poem by a certain D.H Lawrence.

Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
are awake through years with
transferred touch, and go on glowing for long years.
And for this reason, some old things are lovely
warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Things Men Have Made, by D.H Lawrence (1929)
Take a closer look at this poem above. Look at the lines, can you point out the devices used in this poem?

Can we look for these elements of poetry listed below in this poem above before we close?

repetition (often with variation)

patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables

alliteration

occasional internal rhyme (rhyme occurring
inside a line)

occasional rhyme at the ends of lines (often
imperfect rhymes such as half-rhymes and
pararhymes )

patterns of assonance (syllables in which the
vowel sounds are the same)

imagery

Last class was all about the Poetry Themes which were based on the topic 'Using object in Poetry'. Objects in poetry give more themes.

But tonight, the topic for the class will be tagged 'Using objects in poetry Part 3'.

From the individual poems written from the last class where members were asked to choose from the selection of household objects which included light bulb, scary, spoon, pepper grinder, door. etc.

Using objects in poetry can make your poem sounds more interesting as the object could give the poem more theme, for instance, we will be discussing Yuzjet and Harlos's poem in today's class.

From Yuzjet, we have: The Light Bulb

As the darkness flow into the world
For the disappearance of a fount wide ray
With my eyes becomes dysfunctional
With life metamorphose widely dark
Like the inside grave of hell bound sinner
Show courtesy to science.
Incandescence with tungsten
Slaughter the darkness
For the beautiful light has come.

The analysis could go thus:
'As the darkness flow into the world'. This darkness can be bad leaders (Colonial Masters) invading to a nation (Taking Nigeria as an example), like when we were striving for independence'

'For the disappearance of a fount wide ray'. The disappearance of the white in our country, we were considered black, so the darkness is favourable and sweet. We have our genuine and luxurious culture in varieties and they suits us as they are.

'With my eyes becomes dysfunctional'. The invasion of the white to our nation muted many activities of our cultures and traditional behaviours which led us to embrace civilisation of the west.

'With life metamorphose widely dark'. Life becomes strange with the changes and transformation of minds. In embracing the western culture we are not meant to neglect our own. We can't cope with many of their standards. Taking a good look at international monetary markets, for example: $1=#250 (stands to be corrected). This really shows that we're living in the dark, while pretending it's okay!

'Like the inside grave of hell bound sinner'. Imagine how the inside grave of a terrorists would look like or an evil doers? So, most people of this nation has been living in reference to that. Keeping their hopes alive that one day, there will be freedom, there'll be light at the very end of this tunnel.

'Show courtesy to science'. The attainment of Independent was enough to bring freedom and the practice of our culture and tradition. But this independent was engined by God. So, all praise and glory to God. As God himself is Omni-Science and Omni-Presence. Show respect to God by stopping corruption and some evil doings as it stopped the colony masters from using us as slaves.

'Incandescence with tungsten'. For every revolution, there must be some materials/agents that were used to make the revolution a success. In every light bulb, there is an emission of electromagnetic radiation (including visible light) from a hot body as a result of its temperatures.  Towards independence, the Likes of Obafemi Awolowo, Amodu Bello, Nnamdi Azikwe and others played a role in helping Nigeria gain her independence. Let's assume Obafemi Awolowo was the electromagnetic radiation. Amodu Bellow was the hot body, and Nnamdi Azikwe was the temperature. Now, the result of their roles brought the independence  which is the "light bulb".

'Slaughter the darkness'. Yes. Who doesn't know that the independence brought a lot of freedom to Nigeria as a whole? Sending the colonial masters back to their nation is the killing of darkness on this nation's cloud. Who will disagree with me?

Question sir!

Can a reader decipher the writer's poem up to an eighty percent accuracy (without "off-poem" clues/notes)?

Last class, I read the poem repeatedly and couldn't (really) read things outside the presented text
... The poem was great (and i was confused)
