If you want create a new look for your vehicle, then changing the car paint color can help you do just that. In fact you can create a seemingly new car just by changing the paint color on your vehicle. So, if by chance your car's color is not exactly what you want, and you want to make changes, you should be aware of a few facts before rushing out and trying to find a job to do the work. The following list of facts about changing the color of your car's paint can help you be more informed before taking the plunge.

1. Can Be Expensive

If you want to repaint your entire vehicle with a different color, you should be aware that the job can be expensive. Unless you are only looking for the cheapest of paint jobs, like those offered by Charles Scheib or Maaco, then you should be prepared to pay between $1,500 and $5,000 for the work. While cheap companies can do the work for less than $400, you often get what you pay for with paint jobs. If you want a high quality finish that will last for years, spend the extra money and take the car to a shop that costs more and does a much better job.

2. Have to Remove Everything

In order to completely change the color of a vehicle, and to do it right, the paint shop performing the work will have to take everything out of the vehicle. For an extensive new car paint color, the engine will need to be removed as well as almost everything else. The seats, dash, console and even many pieces of trim may have to be removed so that the vehicle can be completely painted. This is one of the reasons why a better shop will charge more for painting a car with a new color. Cheaper shops usually omit this very important step and just paint what you can see on the outside.

3. Requires a Lot of Prep Work

In order to do a proper total car repaint, the current clear coat and paint must first be removed. If the vehicle has dents or other imperfections, these must be sealed and then smoothed out. Properly preparing a vehicle for a total repaint requires a lot of sanding and other prep work. The paint shop will first need to remove wax and clearcoat, and then scuff up the old painted surface before shooting the car with a quality primer. In some cases, the shop will use two or three coats of primer to ensure that the old color will not bleed through to the new paint.

4. Can Take a Long Time to Complete

Although Earl Scheib or Maaco may be able to do a paint job on your car in two or three days, you should probably expect to be without your vehicle for at least a week when having it properly repainted. Because of the amount of work involved in a total car repaint, with a new color, this type of work takes days and not hours.
