It appears you didn't read my post. Translate "abound" into numbers, dumbass. The market cannot support Nigerian consumption.

Cut and join economics? You're obviously too stúpid to comprehend what I wrote. If you owned a business in Nigeria, you would know exactly what I'm talking about. Fúcking ídiot.
You are very uncouth for a female.

You do not need to use swear words as it betrays one's upbringing.

You have zilch knowledge of economics, already IVM, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, ANAMCO and Peugeot are producing cars, Toyota, BMW, etc are about joining and you still choose to live in denial.

a policy coming in without an enabling environment to produce those locally made cars...Jonathan should have worked on electricity first before any fucking policy can come in place..a good policy but wrong timing. .

some parts are locally sourced. Upholstery, side mirror, glass, bolts nd nuts, headrest furs, rubber nd plastic parts etc. These areas are produced locally, and they are jobs to some people. The technicians that fix n assemble the vehicle are also employed.

Thanks for the education.

With the recent slide in the value of the naira and currency controls in place, Importers will think twice before placing orders for foreign made cars. Its actually the perfect time to push forward the automotive policy. I forsee a paradigm shift in vehicle acquisition next year, from foreign made to locally fabricated. The only obstacles are customs corruption and a spike in cross border smuggling, especially from Cotonou. And then these locally assembled vehicles rely on parts imported from outside the country. Our locally made cars will obviously be more expensive to make now that the value of the naira has plummeted. Except the government is planning a relief fund for the vehicle makers to cushion the effects of the nairas fall, they will transfer the cost to the buyers. So in the end, foreign made cars may end up being cheaper than Nigerian fabricated ones.

They don't care about us

There are made in Nigeria cars you can afford. And they will last longer than the "Tokunbo" cars and SUVs.
You will end up spending more money to all fix "Tokunbo" cars and enough to buy a new car from INNOSON.

Your analysis is like that of person that wants to start building a house from the ROOF! Its a good idea when all the foundation required to make it work is in place. And its suppose to be in stages after an alternative means has been created.who is going to buy the new car? With what resources? Where are the jobs? Comparing our economy with that of advance countries where loans are easy to obtain using only your citizenship as a collateral. What are the alternative? Responsible government that have such policies have good transport, rail system for people to fall back to.But this case is like leaving a month old baby in the colds of the night. This is not a people oriented policy. The manufacturers and capitalist are the winners here.I think we need a change .Lets try someone else at least. My future and my sons future is at stake.Nigeria stand up and vote out GEJ.

Who is going to buy the cars? (Who has been buying the tukumbos?) With what resources? (With what resources have the tukumbos been bought?) Where are the jobs? (With what jobs have these tukumbos always been bought?) And you can't even see that stifling these importations to a greater degree will enhance more demand of the made in Nigeria cars simultaneously entailing increase in productivity quantity to match demands and as such requiring more hands on deck (alas employments)? ^^^ Whats really wrong with y'all APC propagandist? The increase in tariffs for imported automobile is to encourage local automobile manufacturers. Common SS2 Economics student will tell you that one way of encouraging local production is increasing import tariffs. That's called Import Substitution Strategy. Aren't you ashamed that Nigeria has become a dumping ground for every kind of crap produced in other climes? We have Innoson, PAN, ANNAMCO, VON, Nissan and other automobile manufacturers in Nigeria and we know that government is trying to revitalize them so as to boosts our economy. Yet you criticize this one very good move government makes to see to its realization. Many of these imported cars have been used for above five years and then they're moved to Nigeria for dumping, after which when you buy, you'll use for no more than three years and the money u would have spent on repairs and maintenance may have exceeded the original cost. Some brand new Innoson cars go for 1.5m and they're trying to beat it down to 1m. So which is better ; buying a brand new car for 1.5m and enjoying it for 3 to 4 years without excessive repair cost or buying a tokie car for 800thousand and spending over 500thousand on repairs in 3 years. A relation of mine has spent about 300th on repairs on a tokie car he bought for about 800th and the car IS STILL HAVING ISSUES. Wont it have been better to just buy a brand new made-in-Nigeria car and save yourself some unecessary stress. Why are we so used to cheap craps and worthless articles? Is that what APC wants for us? Your interpretation of economics, as regards this topic, is basically emotional, lacks basics and full of political sentiments.
Yes, the move is very good but lacks targeted layers of economics indicator in a competitive global market.
The typical pattern of a diversifying economy must address and first focus on good economics indicatives; which is the foundation of basic infrastructures such as: power and road.

Nigeria automotive industry, as it stands and designed, lacks engineering leverage and financial instruments (there's not a bank in 9ja that will make loan available, competitively; say 7% to make car purchase)
In other to survive, the future must be understood not in conflict with the people and culture. This industry will not create jobs because its robotic in nature. What is needed is to locate where wealth opportunity exists and not jump into a bandwagon.

What you have as 1.5m is cheap. Cheap in the sense that its assembling procedures fail to address safety which is the most important aspect in autocar.

Nevertheless, our fearlessness to succeed, which is what this is, on the foundation of innovation which in itself is the concept of control to create wealth opportunity; not necessarily on a quest of car assemblage. When we address policies purely on it's merit and not on political premise, interest and intrigues; but purely on advancing technology, risk-taking and people focus, then the nation wills to succeed will logically land us in Eldorado.

It is a good idea all together to encourage local industries. We can't rely on importation all our life, Nigeria is blessed with so many talents. Just hope it is well implemented because increase in import duties on Tukubo cars without a corresponding increase in local manufacturing wld amount to gross corruption.

And you sure must be among the lots clamouring "BUHARI FOR CHANGE 2015, SAI BUHARI, etc" yet you talk about luxury. Go ask your parents about how much luxury they enjoyed during the Buhari regime back then. Austerity was at its peak and the order of the day then; wages slashed and several luxuries prohibited. Today, some people look back to then and come out to say that regime was the best, this and that. I keep wondering how people clamour for change yet remain so blind and daft to notice one when it surfaces. Nobody keeps doing the same thing and expects a different result. Even if Buhari should emerge as the No 1 citizen come Feb 14, he definitely will effect new policies (of which austerity will sure be paramount like in his previous regime), if he is to usher in any slightest kind of change.
Nigerians really need to be open minded to constructively critique and avoid being blinded by sentiments, nepotism and some form of useless bigotry.
God forbid that I vote buhari or support him. Dislike him.

see, dis our generation should be quite different. Reason plainly and let ur judgements be sentiment-free. Hatred so blindfolds people that even smtin good happens, they will still despise it. This is nt one of those times u will b condemning Jonathan-led administration. Now that cars are being assembled or prosuced in Nigeria, how do we divert people's attention to it rada than long-stayed tokunbo (second-hand)? Tactics now comes in. Import duties (i.e taxes) on tokunbos will b increased wc will in turn lead to the increase in cost price, all in a bid to discourage d patronage by Nigerians so as to embrace our own. If u studied ur O'level Economics well, u would understand wat I'm saying. Pls vote for the PDP; Jonathan, come 2015. Everyone is shouting 'change'; change is not always good and desirable. Mind u, a shift from fiscal Federalism and welfarism to fundamentalism is still a change, isn't it. Nigerian should not be naive and later have themselves blamed. Embrace the current President, it's not as if he's below par ( in Prof. Wole Soyinka's voice).

Discouraging importation is no doubt, the best way to attain economic development

Less importation= more demand for local commodities = encouraging local enterpreneurship= more employment opportunities.

However,

Inasmuch as supporting local industries is praiseworthy, quality control shouldn't be taken lightly.... The Standard Organization of Nigeria, and other quality standard regulatory agencies should become less of a bureaucratic rubber-stamp, and rise up to their responsibilities of ensuring public safety, and commensurate value for money spent

But, with this Otueke fellow undecided

I just sense that the sole purpose of this increase in duties, is to add more fuel to his looting jamboree..... We are yet to recover from the fuel subsidy removal scam, missing billions, etc, and he deems it fit to still assault the Nigerian public again..... angry

Great idea if it's well planned and organised .
We have innoson that can develop into a force and they need to grow , the government needs to patronise them likewise citizens .
A government grant loan system can be of help.

Let us assume that the policy is great and again, please note my choice of word "ASSUME" . . . . Is Mack and Volvo and other Truck companies moving to Nigeria anytime soon to produce dump trucks or why the increase in tariff on such as well.

Last year, i cleared a Mack truck at a cost of only 250K Naira, and 2 weeks again, i clear same at 550K Naira.

Now tell me, how do we develop without those kinda trucks?

How do we develop when all the money is going into a pocket that we MIGHT never see the effect of it?

I am not too much against the policy, but the problem is, it is not done right and the timing is horrible.

How many of those companies already build the factory where the rides will be made or where they will be assembled? So why not wait till production has started before the policy . . . . If they are so confident in what they are doing, leave people with choices of either buy "Made in Nigeria" brand new or used that are imported . . . . . America produces and assembles and yet people still import rides there . . . Canada do same, so why do we have to force people to use ONLY "Made in Nigeria"
A nation where Quality is lacking as long as money exchange hands, will you trust the testing to be done well, if AT ALL?
