Beautifull. . .
Point of correction . . .Leopard is Ekun, Cheetah is Amotekun, Tiger doesn't exist in Africa however IFA might make mention of it but no researcher to detect it as the Asian Tiger. Check here for my take on this extinction issue facing us slumbering Yorubas.

Leopard is Ekun.

Tigers are not native to Africa or west Africa, so there would be no indigenous word for them unless the soldiers who saw them in Asia, came back with stories. And they'd probably call them ekun since they are big cats. However, technically ekun is leopard.

Interesting.
I was familiar with most of them, However a few of the more rare animals, I didn't know.

point of correction, Cobra is EJO
while Snake is EREE (These days everyone calls all snakes ejo, which is wrong)
Python is AJOLA
Giraffe is AGUNFON
cat can be OLOGBO or OLOGINNI ... but Ologbo is most popular these days, just the same way broom can be OWO or IGBALE, but Igbale is more popular these days/

I thought Mouse was EKU or EKUTE
which one is eliri ?

Tiger exists in Asia, not Africa (certainly not west Africa), and there's no word for it.

Ekun is leopard but might be extended to mean tiger in a general sense for big cat.

Great post. I've learn alot up there. I do think we need names for plants and trees as well, I wish we have a thread dedicated to that. Please Op, change thread title to 'comprehensive names of Animals in Yoruba World' In other words, I think Yannibo is female ijapa, not beetle, and Rhinosarus, Turuku in Yoruba. Also Egbin, is Zebra.
