i just went through my little cousins holiday assignment and i found this question, it took me time to fully remember the rules and solve it....but still i aint all that certain... so maths guru help out question: a man is four times as old as his son. five years ago the man was seven times as old as his son.... a.. how old are they now b.. how old were they fives years ago... thanks 1 Like |

A. The man is 40years while the son is 10 b. The man was 35 while the son was 5 |

Let y be man's age and x be son's age. y = 4x ........1 (y-5) = 7 (x-5) ........2 Inputing 1 into 2 and opening bracket. 4x-5 = 7x-35 Collecting like terms 7x-4x = 35-5 x = 30/3 = 10 y = 4x y =40 (a) x=10, y=40 (b) Five years ago, x=5, y=35 OP, simple enough or you need further breakdown? 2 Likes |
