FUTO To Withdraw Students With CGPA Below 1.0

The Vice-Chancellor, FUTO, Prof C. C. Asiabaka has re-stated his commitment to restore and implement the original policy of withdrawal of students with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 1.0 at the end of Year 1. He noted that the renewed commitment was to bring back the spirit of hard work and competitiveness that initially characterised students trained in FUTO.
In his communication to the University Senate, Prof Asiabaka stated that the administration has put in place measures to ensure that only students that have the mental capacity to cope with the academic rigour of our great University are retained. He noted that most Heads of Department have failed to implement this policy to the letter. He equally noted that students who have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 1.0 are still allowed to continue registration of courses without caution by the Department. He added that the restoration of a credible admission process by Management has raised the academic standard and would eventually culminate to producing quality graduates in the near future.
He equally urged Deans and Heads of Department to put in place measures that would weed out the deficient students from the system once their deficiencies are detected.

NYSC Shifts Mobilisation Date For Batch ‘A’ Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps on Monday said that the date of mobilisation for Batch ‘A’ corps members has been shifted from Tuesday, May 5, to Tuesday, May 26, 2015.
Aderibigbe said, “Part of the reasons is because of the forthcoming general elections. You know our corps members are participating in the elections. February 21 is when elections will be rounding off and Batch A, that is supposed to pass out, will still be in service to continue with the elections.”

The NYSC spokeswoman denied that the action was due to fears that there could be a repeat of the 2011 post-election violence.
She said, “No, which post-election violence? It is not because of that; we have three batches already in service and they are all participating in the elections. It is not because of fear of post-election violence.”
A earlier sent by the NYSC read, “The management of the NYSC wishes to inform the general public, especially prospective corps members, that due to some operational exigencies, corps members will be mobilised in only two batches this year: 2015 Batch ‘A’ and 2015 Batch ‘B’.
“Furthermore, the 2015 Batch ‘A’ Orientation Course has been scheduled to take place from Tuesday, May 5 to Tuesday, May, 26 2015, and not in the month of March as obtained in the previous years.
“All prospective corps members are advised to check the NYSC website: www.nysc.gov.ng for details of the 2015 Batch ‘A’ mobilisation time-table and be guided accordingly, please.”

ov. Fashola Planning To Shut LASU –PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter, has raised alarm over the purported plans of  the Lagos State government plans to shut the Lagos State University (LASU) to prevent the students from exercising their civic rights on the day of election.
The party also charged LASU students to resist any attempt to shut the institution for the presidential and governorship elections in February.
The party in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, also accused the Fashola-led APC government of confirming the low premium they placed on education in the state by making the access and standard in the sector very elusive or unattractive.
According to PDP, the recent directive by the governor that students seeking admission into junior secondary schools must pay N10,000 each is the highpoint of the Fashola-led APC government’s resolve to make affordable education unavailable in the state.
The party stated that by this directive, the APC government in the state has fully commercialised the education sector just like all other sectors where no government service is enjoyed unless paid for exorbitantly.
“Education is no more affordable in Lagos State. The state now has the highest number of private schools because of the failed public schools. The governor obviously is confused on positioning our education sector. In Akwa Ibom State, education is free and compulsory. Even the students get free lunch and cash allowances to motivate them attend the schools for education.
“In Lagos State, the sector is only managed on paper. With all the huge allocations in the budget for almost 16 years, the sector is still dwindling every day. Parents have withdrawn their wards from all public schools. The schools have become mere community fields and abode for animals. The few befitting public schools are the ones renovated by NGOs, corporate bodies and philanthropists.
“They put very low premium on education so much that they takeover premises belonging to LASPOTECH and Nursing School, converting same to their personal usage. Fashola is now planning to shut LASU on January 31st so that students may not be around the community, where many had registered as voters.
“The intention is to frustrate the students resolve to cast protest votes against APC.”

Federal University, Oye Shut Down Indefinitely Over Staff Protest
Brouhaha Erupts in Federal University, Oye Ekiti, on Monday as staff of the institution went on rampage and shut the institution to protest the alleged continuous detention of their colleagues arrested by the State Security Service.
The aggrieved staff decline to simmer down despite plea from the spokesperson from the institution, Mr. Chris Ukaegbu.
They also protested against alleged plot by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, to sack some of them and arrest those who participated in the December 18, 2014 protest against him.
The aggrieved staff that accused Asuzu of being behind the arrest of some of the staff by the DSS during the week ordered their colleagues in the lecture room to vacate.
It was learnt that a lecturer who defied the order was rough-handled by his colleagues that saw him as a traitor.
A staff, who spoke under anonymity said, “What caused the latest crisis is that, during the week, some perceived arrowhead of the December protest were arrested by men of the SSS.
“Later, the Vice Chancellor used his influence to release those he believed could have a change of heart among them leaving behind those that can fight the cause of the staff. This actually angered the staff and they decided to protest for them to effect the release of their members.”
But the spokesperson of the institution, Mr. Chris Ukaegbu, denied that any of the staff was in the detention of the DSS.
He also denied that there were plans to sack the staff who participated in the December protest.
He said, “Nobody was or has been arrested. Maybe some people felt what they have done may attract some sanctions, so they are trying to attract public sympathy.
“The VC is a peace-loving man who would not intimidate anybody. There is a procedure for sacking people. Has any of them been queried on the matter?”
There was heavy presence of anti-riot policemen at the main gate when our correspondent visited.
Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi confirmed the development but said he was yet to be properly briefed.
