The Yaba College of Technology declares 22-day holidays for elections

(YABATECH) Lagos, has directed its full-time and part-time students to proceed on a 22-day holidays to enable them exercise their civic rights during next month’s general elections.
This is contained in a bulletin signed by Mr Charles Oni, Head, Public Relations Unit of the college.
According to the bulletin, the holidays would start from Feb. 11 and end on March 4.
It also stated that hostels and lecture theatres would be under lock and key throughout the period.
The bulletin quoted the rector of the college, Dr Margaret Ladipo, as appealing to the students to comport themselves during the holidays.
Mixed reactions, however, trailed the announcement, as some students said the holidays would disrupt the second semester academic calendar.
Others commended the management for being safety conscious and allowing students who are not resident in Lagos to travel for the elections.
Miss Ronke Adeyemi, a National Diploma , Science and Laboratory Technology part-time student told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that it was a good decision.
“It is a good decision and I am happy with it. It is very risky for us to stay on campus during the elections because anything can happen.
“I will use the period to read and prepare for my test because as soon as we resume in March, we are starting our test,’’ she said.
Another student who pleaded anonymity, said that the holidays was too long and would deny the students the opportunity to receive enough lectures and prepare for examinations.
The National Diploma Textile Technology student said that the holidays should be reduced to 10 days in the interest of the students. (NAN) #Source: Dailytrustnews

Rector begs Ekiti poly staff to resume work

The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado -Ekiti, Ekiti State, Mrs Theresa Akande, has promised to pay all outstanding check-off dues owed the cooperative societies in the school as soon as possible.

She said this yesterday during a meeting with staff of the institution that defied the directive of their unions not to resume.

The workers have been on strike since January 5 this year over issues bordering on  welfare.
Akande, who lamented the rate at which misinformation and falsification were being peddled by the erstwhile unions’ leaders of the polytechnic, said arrangements have been concluded to pay all outstanding dues owed the cooperatives arising from the implementation of the second phase of CONTISS 15.
She added that the institution’s Governing Council, acting within the powers conferred on it, took the decision to suspend all unions’ activities on campus in good faith, so that peace could return to the polytechnic. While begging staff to go back to work not minding threats by the suspended unions’ leaders, the rector again appealed to the teaching staff to have the love of the students at heart, more-so that the polytechnic is yet to complete the 2013/2014 academic session due to series of industrial unrest in the polytechnic.

No Extension Of Service Year Over Elections, Says NYSC
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Monday, dismissed speculation that the service year of outgoing corps members listed to participate in the rescheduled general election would be extended.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the NYSC Director of Press, Mrs Bose Aderibigbe, said, contrary to insinuations, the outgoing corps members would participate in the elections as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Aderibigbe said their completion of the national service would not affect their participation in the elections, stressing that INEC had already trained them for the exercise.
She said the NYSC did not make provisions for their welfare beyond 12 months, stressing that keeping them till the election date in March would exceed its budget.
“They have finished as corps members; that is why we are passing them out. If they stay till March, it means government will be paying their money.
“They are only entitled to 12 months’ pay from NYSC. So, as soon as they pass out, they get their certificates and go.
“They may stay back and participate in the elections because they have been trained to do it, not as corps members, but as ad hoc staff of INEC,’’ she said.
Aderibigbe said the welfare of the outgoing corps members, who have been scheduled to participate in the elections, would be taken care of by the electoral commission.
According to her, INEC had promised to pay them their entitlements, including transport and feeding allowances.
She explained that INEC would pay them a percentage before the elections and the balance would be paid afterwards.
The director called on the affected persons not to entertain fear, as their entitlements would be given to them at the appropriate time.
On the safety of corps members participating in the elections, Aderibigbe said the NYSC management had constituted a security committee to guarantee the safety and security of participating corps members.
The 2014 Batch `A’ corps members will pass out on February 19. (NAN)
