The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Friday said that it suspended Medical laboratory science courses for the 2015/2016 academic session to enable it take stock of the programme.

The NUC Director of Academic Standards, Dr Gidado kumo, gave the explanation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

NAN recalls that students, who sought to apply for the discipline in 2015/2016 academic year, complained that it was not listed by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Kumo said that JAMB removed the course from its website for 2015/2016 session in compliance with an NUC directive.

According to him, the NUC has numerous unresolved problems with the Medical Laboratory Science and the Medical Laboratory Council.

“We decided as a commission whose responsibility it is to oversee all the programmes to stop the programmes and take stock of the activities of the programmes and the council across Nigerian university system.
He described as illegal the directive from the council for the establishment of Medical Laboratory Science faculties.
Kumo said that Medical Laboratory Science should be a department within the faculty of basic medical sciences in the Colleges of Health Sciences.

According to him, government may not have the capacity to fund these faculties as proposed because it will amount to duplication and extra cost for government.

“In addition, the council further went ahead to produce a new curriculum and circulated to universities for adoption which was clearly outside the jurisdiction of the council.

“Not forgetting also that in 2008, there were many universities running this programme without the approval of NUC; some of them were run in institutes.

He said that a comprehensive auditing of the programmes were conducted before they were closed down and asked universities to take the students to their main campuses.

The director said that NUC remained the statutory agency of government responsible for approval of courses, approval of new faculties and determination of the funding of universities.

everybody agreed to abide by the outcome of that comitee. why is JOHESU rejecting it? they were looking foward to the outcome of that comitee even more than NMA. they had more influence or representation than NMA.
all their constituent associations were fully involved in that comitee. they attended meetings not as JOHESU but as pharmacvists council of nigeria, nigerian association of nurses and midwives,association of radiographers in nigeria,medical lab scientist association etc.

the only body representing doctors was NMA. NARD was absent!!! JOHESU were more involved as their different associations than NMA. why are they now rejecting the report

Listen kid, It is obvious you are still an undergraduate struggling to get out, one wonders how a Faculty of MLS affects your MBBS grades. Leave health politics for the Professionals on ground and concentrate on your grades. Just an advice.

The point is that even the excesses of this laboratory council underlies the reason y most of these regulatory bodies should be combined or even outlawed . Bms is an integral part of medicine. Infact it is exactly what makes medicine; it is the foundation. because the forefathers of medicine felt the workload for medicine was enormous hence the birth of this allied health courses. Now u are suggesting that those basic medical science be usurped from medicine and then bcom a part of another faculty hence it would b like a "borrowed" course for medical students!!! Damn. Do u even know u cannot pass a surgical primary exam if u don't know all this BMS courses including what constitute MLS? Durin my residency days u had to refer back to ur BMS else u won't pass .now u jokers want some part of that BMS to either b duplicated or b moved out of college of medicine . Courses that make up MLS is not exclusive to medical lab tech student it is also a part of medicine.,if u give a whole faculty to MLS y not do thesame to anatomy, biochemistry, nursing ?? You think after Nigerians have spent legislative hours finetunning and promulgating medical laboratory council laws you can wake up anyday and start selecting for the MLS council what laws to enforce. What excesses are you talking about?. Did they chase you from your surgical rooms?, Did they stop you from entering the GOPD rooms?. What exactly do you mean by excesses?.

Funny what you call armed thugs cos most inspection are always accompanied by men of the armed forces. Whatever suit it is in Nigeria MLSCN will win it dey are performing their constitutional duties.

Do you know deres another report in 2011 on same matter Justice Abdullahi Gusau's report wc gave detail to the actual disharmony and not what Yayale wrote. I'd implore you to look for it and read carefully and compare to what ur oga Yayale wrote. Y can't you and the NMA push for the implementation of the white paper of Justice Gusau if you don't know what you are doing

The physicians totally outnumbered other medical and health professionals in that commitee and are trying others in attempt to nullify the federal act that backs them up. It doesn't work that way.
