FOR MEN ONLY - WEBISCENE 1

FADE IN
EXT. MAYBREW STREET – DAY
A young man, late 20’s – GIDEON- jogs down the street.

GIDEON
[Smiling]
Good morning Mrs. Morrison!
He waves as he jogs into his compound.

MRS. MORRISON
Good morning Gideon! How are you?
GIDEON
I’m good. But not as good looking as you are!
MRS. MORRISON
[Blushing]
O… You’ll spoil me with your words.
GIDEON
That’s because you’re one of a kind!
MRS. MORRISON
O…
GIDEON
You have a lovely day now.
MRS. MORRISON
And you too!
Gideon opens his door and steps into his home.
EXT. GIDEON’S HOUSE– DAY
Gideon steps out of his house. Mrs. Morrison is watering the plants in her garden close to the fence demarcating her compound and Gideon’s.
MRS MORRISON
What’s wrong with your car?
GIDEON
I take the bus every Friday remember.
MRS. MORRISON
O… I wanted to give you mine if yours had a problem.
GIDEON
That’s so nice of you but I’m okay.
MRS MORRISON
I know you are. But I wonder why she did not see it. What was that her name again?
GIDEON
Are you referring to my ex-girlfriend?
MRS MORRISON
[nods]
Yes.
GIDEON
Nathalie.
MRS MORRISON
Yes. She does not know what she is missing.
GIDEON
I guess we learn everyday Mrs. Morrison. But you know I’ve been seeing someone for some months now.
MRS. MORRISON
[frowns - irritated]
Is it the one that goes off and comes back?
GIDEON
[smiles]
At least she comes back.
MRS MORRISON
You and all this your sweety-sweety named girlfriends. Why don’t you find some sweet girl on that bus escapade of yours? [Winking at him]
GIDEON
Nooo! [Makes a face] It gives me the chance to walk through Marina a little to check the book stores’ front row display for the week. I want to see if any of the books I edited made it through.
MRS MORRISON
I pray it does.
GIDEON
I pray so too. And now, if I don’t get to the station on time, I’ll miss the BRT. Then I’ll have to pray I don’t get a query.
MRS MORRISON
O! Silly me; I forgot you had to go to work.
GIDEON
No problem. [Begins to walk down the street] I’ll get you some moi-moi on my way back!
MRS MORRISON
That would be nice!

EXT. ALLEN AVENUE – DAY
A busy street-- People everywhere, going about their normal activities. Gideon walks among them.

GIDEON [VO]
Learning is an everyday process, and as humans we are required to learn. We acquire knowledge both in and out of the classroom. That is why a visit to the book store can be very helpful.
[Gideon stops in front of a book store, looks up and goes in]
INT. BOOK STORE - DAY
Inside the book store, he walks straight to the front row display section. A book catches his attention. He picks it up and the front cover reveals a woman with her index finger under the chin of a man as she tries to get his attention.
Book title -10 ways to get his attention.
He opens to read the table of content
GIDEON
[Sotto]
10 ways to get his attention… Ha! Why not a hundred?
He chuckles as he opens the book to examine the table of content. As he examines the expression on his face changes from time to time. Nods his head or does something with his lips.
GIDEON
[Sotto]
They say 10 but each has babies so I was right when I said 100. <still examining> Most of these stuffs are good. They can actually work for me. I wonder how many of these have been sold.
He walks to the counter to meet the sales lady.
SALES LADY
[Smiles]
Good morning Sir.
GIDEON
[Smiles]
Good morning. I’m sorry to bother you but I was wondering about the sales of this book. [Placing the book on the counter]
How many has been sold?
SALES LADY
Well sir, the amount I cannot disclose but it is a substantial amount to make the author smile. And this is the last copy of a new batch.
GIDEON
Wow! Then I guess I better grab my copy… now! [They both laugh]
SALES PERSON
[As she keys in the details]
But sir don’t you think it’s odd you buying a book written for women?

GIDEON
I am a man that reads broad and besides, it does not hurt to know what’s in a woman’s head. I believe it’ll leave me fully armed for all machinations or tactics.
SALES LADY
But we are not the devil. [Bagging the book]
GIDEON
No man is an angel either.
SALES LADY
[Smiles]
Well have a nice day and happy reading. [Hands him the bag]
GIDEON
I intend to enjoy it [collects the bag] Thank you. [Turns to leave but turns back] Has anyone told you, you have a lovely smile?
The sales lady smiles broadly with a blush.
GIDEON
Well you do. Bye-bye.
Gideon walks away from the counter and exits the store. Sales person attends to another customer. As she swipes the book across the bar code reader, Gideon’s face is seen. She raises her head to look in the direction of the exit but he was gone. She reads the book title – Politics and me, Politics and us. She puts the book in a bag and hands it to the young man.
SALES LADY
The author just left.
CUSTOMER
Really?! [Turns around in every direction]
Kai! It’s a school text ooo.
SALES LADY
Have a lovely day.
CUSTOMER
You too.
[He walks toward the exit]

INT. GIDEON'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Gideon sits at a table to read under a table lamp. Light music playing in the background. His face reveals mixed expressions of seriousness and smiles. He is on the first page when the door bell rings. He closes the book before heading for the door.
Opening the door, he sees his girlfriend – CINDY – standing outside.
GIDEON
Hello Dear
CINDY
Hello darling. [Hugs and kiss]
GIDEON
Why are you so dressed? I don’t remember us having a date.
CINDY
Nope! [Walking in] I’m going to the club with my girls and thought I’d stop by and ask if you would, this once, come with me to the club. [Walks towards his reading table and picks up the book]
GIDEON
You know I work on Fridays and I do not go to the club.
CINDY
You can’t blame me for trying.
GIDEON
And I can’t stop you from having fun.
[He smiles as he walks up to her to place his hands on her shoulder. She turns to face him]
Now you go and have fun. Don’t worry about me.
[Ushering her toward the door]
CINDY
You gonna be alright by yourself?
GIDEON
I’m old enough to be on my own.
CINDY
But you‘re my baby.[Kiss]
GIDEON
I know.
[On her way out –]
CINDY
Don’t forget, lunch at 1pm tomorrow with my parents.
GIDEON [making a face]
How can I forget?
CINDY
[Opens the door]
The suit I picked out for you is the first in the wardrobe.
GIDEON
OK.
CINDY
I also selected a tie. [Peck] Mmmwoah! Don’t miss me.
[Gideon smiles as he watches her walk to her car, and drive away]
CINDY
Bye!!!
[Waves and closes the door]
[Gideon goes off to the kitchen. Opening the fridge, he sees his image reflection on a foil wrapped small chops from the office gathering earlier that day. He furrows at the site in thought. He begins repeating the words--]
GIDEON
Eye contact… Eye contact
[Retrieves the juice box and shuts the fridge]

INT. OCEAN VIEW RESTAURANT – NOON
GIDEON is seated in a gathering of four – GIDEON, CINDY, CINDY’s FATHER and MOTHER. The way they stare shows he is under evaluation.

GIDEON
Sir, Cindy tells me you just acquired a license to open your own TV station.
FATHER
[Air of arrogance]
Well, it’s not much of a deal…
(picking up the glass cup from the table)
I just asked the minister and he knows he owes me a favor and voila!
(waving the glass to buttress the point before sipping)
GIDEON
That’s good. It’s fun to know that the minister is a friend of the family.
(There is a sharp halt in all that is happening at the mention of the word - Family)
MOTHER
Cindy dearie, have you told your…
[looking for the word] …friend about your travelling plans?
CINDY
Yes mummy.
[Gideon has the surprised look but feigns a smile of support]
MOTHER
[dropping cutlery like she is tired of the meal]
To GIDEON: Gideon please remind me do you do for a living?
GIDEON
I am an editor in a big publishing house.

MOTHER
Oooo…
(She turns to her husband and begins to stroke his back lightly)
Marcus here always wanted to be a singer but he knew the life would be hard and not too rewarding. That is after weighing the options and ever changing trends.
GIDEON
Well, I believe if he had followed his passion he would have made it anyway.
MOTHER
[raised brow]
Why?
GIDEON
He has the tenacity to succeed. Music to me is more than singing. It has various sections that can be lucrative enough, for example song writing, and production.
MOTHER
But the pool is so little and the populace enjoys the rubbish from jokers.
GIDEON
That’s the thing ma, we follow the ”can’t beat them join them” saying and have little adventure left. I can name one in many that made music their own.
[All had stopped eating]
A good example was Late Michael Jackson, he set the trend and…
MOTHER
…Ended up with debt and lawsuits.
GIDEON
Same happens in business. Our Competition would look for means to take us out and...
MOTHER
Are you saying you are okay with being an editor?
GIDEON
[pause]
It’s what I love doing. I am hoping someday I would make a difference but for now, let me keep learning.
MOTHER
[eyes on GIDEON]
Cindy, accompany me to the ladies. I want to powder my nose.
[They leave the table in a hurry.]
[GIDEON AND FATHER having a awkward silent moment]

FATHER
[clearing throat]
[calmly]
Young man, what my wife is trying to say is leave our daughter alone. She’s all we’ve got.
GIDEON
You should also wonder if she is all I’ve got too sir.
MOTHER [OS]
As a meal ticket or what?
[settling in and looking at GIDEON. Who in turn is too stunned to answer.]
GIDEON
[Smiling]
That was fast.
MOTHER
…We changed our mind. In fact, Marcus I am ready to go home.
[They begin to leave.]
MOTHER
It was nice to finally meet you.
FATHER
[No words just a pause and nod]
CINDY
I told you to make sure mummy like you.
GIDEON
As long as you love me, then who cares?
[MOTHER is standing at a distance, evidently waiting for CINDY]
Go with them we’ll talk later…
[She is leaving but… No reply]
…right?
[No reply]
[GIDEON returns to his seat, looks at the untouched meals.
GIDEON [sighs]
That went well.
[He stands to exit]

FOR MEN ONLY - WEBISCENE 2

TWO WEEKS LATER
INT. GIDEON’S GARAGE/HONDA – DAY
Gideon adjusts the rare view mirror. His eyes can be seen in them. He starts the engine and backs out the garage slowly.
He parks in front of Mrs. Morrison’s compound and alights.

EXT. MRS MORRISON’S FRONT DOOR – DAY
Gideon knocks on the door and calls out.
GIDEON
Mrs. Morrison! [pause] Mrs. Morrison! It’s time for us to go!
A click from within makes him step back, anticipating the opening of the door. A young lady appears and the shock can be seen on his face
EDNA
Hello, good morning. I’m sorry she is still in bed for now.
GIDEON
Hi, I’m supposed to take her to the hospital. She said she has a doctor’s appointment for 10.
EDNA
I know.
GIDEON
Sorry, may I ask who you are?
EDNA
I’m Edna.

GIDEON
And would Edna be able to take her down to the hospital? Sorry for that but I’ve not seen your face around here.
EDNA
I grew up here; was born in the same hospital and Doctor Morgan has been our family doctor since I can remember.
GIDEON
O… Uh… You must be Mrs. Morrison’s daughter.
EDNA
Yep! That’ll be me!
GIDEON
I’ve heard so much about you. But she calls you Shalom.
[She smiles as he offers his hand]
I’m Gideon; her neighbor.
EDNA
Ok, Gideon the lovely neighbor.
[Taking his hand]
I guess we’ve both heard a lot about each other. Anytime she calls, she can’t stop saying good things about you.
GIDEON
Not exactly true.
EDNA
Well, let me use this opportunity to say thank you for everything.
GIDEON
I didn’t see how I could say no to a beauty like your mom.
EDNA
She also says you flatter a lot and I’m seeing that first hand.
[Gideon Smiles]
EDNA [contd]
Well, I guess you’re on your way to work so I’ll not take much of your time.
GIDEON
Ok. Umm—welcome. You are staying for a while right?
EDNA
I guess long enough.
GIDEON
Alright then, see you later.
[He turns to walk away]
EDNA
Aren’t you forgetting something?
GIDEON
What’s that?
EDNA
Moi-moi!
Gideon stands with his mouth ajar but nothing comes out.
EDNA
[Smiles]
Yep! She tells me everything. Have a lovely day, lovely-neighbor-Gideon.
[Gideon stares at the door as it closes. A little bedazzled but turns and walks to his car anyway]
INT. WINSLOW PUBLISHING BUILDING – DAY
Gideon walks into the building and salutes the security at the front desk.
GIDEON
Hey Azeez!
AZEEZ
Hey Gideon! How was your weekend?
GIDEON
Same as always, Man – U - scripts!
AZEEZ
That’s true; did you see the game last night?
GIDEON
Nope. I slept off.
Azeez
That was some clear winning.
GIDEON
I guess I’ll have to be content with the replay. How’s the family?
AZEEZ
Fine. Aisha just got into OAU so I’m looking forward to more bills.
GIDEON
If there’s anything I can do, keep me posted.
[Walks toward the elevator]
Azeez
Thanks men. Hey how about Cindy?
Gideon Turns and makes a face but says nothing.
He boards the elevator.
INT. GIDEON’S OFFICE – DAY
He is sitting behind his desk, working, with stacks of manuscripts, neatly arranged on his table then the door opens.
JAIYE
Hey partner.
GIDEON
Partner in what? [Without raising his head]
JAIYE
In everything.
Enters the office and closes the door
GIDEON
Hope you have not done anything that requires begging on your behalf.
JAIYE
Of course not, I’m a changed man.
[Takes the seat in front of Gideon]
[Silence]
[Gideon drops his pen and raises his head]
GIDEON
Alright Jaiye out with it, what’s on your mind? What do you want to talk about?
JAIYE
[Hesitant]
I heard what happened between you and Cindy.
GIDEON
What happened? Nothing happened. We are on a break.
JAIYE
How many times? This is like the third time.
GIDEON
We are on a break Jaiye, on-a-break.
JAIYE
Call it whatever you want. I say she’s taking you for granted. I mean, last two weeks you went through the torture with the parents, that horrible dinner that was more like a business meeting.
GIDEON
How come you are painting it so well?
JAIYE
Because, I know you so well to know when something is boring.
GIDEON
It’s all good.
JAIYE
That’s what you said the last time.
[Gideon stays silent]
JAIYE [continues]
I’m sorry bro. It’s just that I can’t stand it when a good guy like you is being used like this.
GIDEON
Thanks.
[Silence]
JAIYE
Tell you what; let’s go clubbing tonight.
GIDEON
I don’t go…
JAIYE
Exactly! Tonight, you’re going to do something you’ve not done before.
[Stands to leave]
GIDEON
But-
JAIYE
But me no buts. Make sure you look good.
[Opens the door]
I’ll pick you up at 8.
Gideon looks at the door and around at the works left to be done. Exhales and continues working.

INT. GIDEON'S HOUSE/BATHROOM - NIGHT
Gideon stares at his image in the mirror. Hair brushed properly, dressed up and ready to roll. He has that sleek mafia boss look but the black version. He exhales and exits the bathroom.

INT. JIMMY'S CLUB APAPA - NIGHT
Gideon at the bar, watching everyone on the dance floor, bobbings his head to the music. A Lady walks in and captures more attention than necessary. Guys walk up to her in turn as she walks in.
BACK TO SCENE
Gideon stares. He taps Jaiye beside him. Not taking his eyes off her.
GIDEON
Hey Jaiye, who's she?
JAIYE
Who?
[Turns in the direction]
--Ok. That's Kike. She works on the top floor.
GIDEON [Eyes still on Kike]
We work on the top floor.
JAIYE
Nope. This top floor is beyond our reach. But that’s the spirit.
[Taps Gideon on the back and returns to what he is doing.]
GIDEON
What do you mean?
JAIYE
Look at the way she blows off those guys with a smile.
[Kike is seen just smiling politely as the guys come and go. She does not seem to be saying a word, but they leave all the same]

BACK TO SCENE
JAIYE
Now, that's cold.
GIDEON
I'm different.
JAIYE
It’s that difference that makes Cindy go and come whenever.

[Gideon turns to look at him]
GIDEON
Now, that's cold.
JAIYE
I’m sorry bro but you’re just too cool.
[Silence]
JAIYE
Ok. Ok. What could you possibly say to her that would make a difference?
GIDEON
Watch and learn Jaiye, watch and learn.

[Kike walks towards the bar. She settles on a stool not far away.]
KIKE
Bailey, please.
Her eyes meet with Gideon’s once… twice… and again but no words. He gives intentional stares and waits for her to look his way and when she does he lingers a little then removes his eyes. She smiles. Jaiye watches from a distance. She looks his way but he acts oblivious. Then she finishes her drink and leaves. As she walks away Jaiye walks up to his friend.
JAIYE
What was that?
GIDEON
What was what?
JAIYE
She gave you all the lights and you just extinguished all of them. Why?
GIDEON
[smiles]
Don't rush my friend... Don't rush. I just established a contact.
JAIYE
What contact?

INT. GIDEON'S OFFICE - DAY
Gideon and Jaiye are standing next to the copier in the office.
GIDEON
He hands a paper to Jaiye.
--This contact.
[Jaiye collects the paper and studies its content]
JAIYE
When did you get this?
GIDEON
Today.
JAIYE
How?
GIDEON
That day, I established eye contact. And that led to today's conversation.
JAIYE
Everyone does eye contact every day.
GIDEON
No my friend. Not my kind of eye contact. You see with this kind of eye contact Let her know you looked her way, let the look be more of a compliment than that of sexual attraction. Let it be more of a passing glance, brief enough to make her know that you looked her way. This way the look you create would be so honest that it will seem like a coincidence.
JAIYE
[Gawked]
Wow! Where did all this come from?
GIDEON
I guess I had it in me. But the secret behind it is always patience.
JAIYE
When will you see her again?
GIDEON
Whenever.
JAIYE
You must tell me how to do it!
GIDEON
In due time my friend-- In due time.

INT. GIDEON'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Paper on the table. Gideon rules out another step on the paper – Hand-Shake.
This reveals the next step - Conversations.
