What are you trying to host files or local Web services?


Elaborate so I can advice.

Once they are on d same LAN(as ur post suggests), then d only thing that needs to be done for one of them to act as a 'server' to d others is to install the necessary softwares depending on the service u want it to perform, so for instance if u want it to act as an ftp server, u install an ftp sever software on it, if u want it to act as a mail or http server, u install a mail or http server software(like apache) on it.

So once the server is up and running, all d other nodes on the network(known as the clients) can access a particular service on d sever by connecting to it via it's IP address and port no. using a client software depending on d service; e.g http client software(popularly known as d http/web browser) for http service, ftp browser for ftp service. Etc.

Of course this is d least requirement for setting up a system as a server. Other things such as powerful hardware resources, firewall, security may need to be considered depending on d size and volume of traffic on d network.

Though, ur question is not too clear cos it just appear simple n basic which actually may not be. cos that can easily be handled using conventional windows OS network settings.

So if actually, it's what am thinking, then you may wanna have a centralised management. probably u may be looking at having the computers joined to a single domain..

or maybe, am not getting things right...let's know what you you're wanna achieve with that network.
