10 Things You Should Know About Saudi Arabia’s New King by bobonicez: 11:33am On Jan 23, 2015
The death of Saudi Arabia’s monarch, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz on Friday, January 23, has ushered in a new regime in the royal kingdom.

Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who was the Crown Prince until Abdullah’s death, has ascended the throne previously occupied by his late half-brother.

Here are 10 things you should know about the new King of Saudi Arabia:

He was born on 31 December 1935.

He is the child of late King Abdul Aziz bin al-Saud, who was the founder of modern day Saudi Arabia.

He is one of the "Sudairi Seven", an influential faction within the royal family consisting of the seven sons of King Abdulaziz by a favourite wife, Princess Hassa al-Sudairi.

He was the Governor of Riyadh from 1955-1960 and again from 1963 to 2011.

He was appointed Defence Minister in 2011 upon the death of his brother Crown Prince Sultan.

He was named Crown Prince and heir apparent to the throne in 2012.

He owns important stake in one of the Arab world's largest media groups.

He is believed to have suffered at least one stroke that has left him with limited movement in his left arm.

He ascended the throne on Friday, January 23, 2015.

He will be succeeded by half-brother, Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, the youngest surviving son of the late King Abdulaziz who has been named Crown Prince.

Interesting fact about King Salman:

Hassa bint Ahmed Al Sudairi (d 1969) was one of the favourite wives of King Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia.
The family are part of the Dawasir tribe. The mother of King Abdulaziz, Sarah Al Sudairi, was also a member of the Sudairi family.

Hassa bint Ahmed was born in 1900. King Abdulaziz married her twice. She was his 8th wife. Their first marriage was in 1913 when she was thirteen years. In 1920, they remarried. In the period between their first and second marriages, Hassa bint Ahmad married King Abdulaziz’s half brother of the same age, Muhammad bin Abdul Rahman.Hassa had a son from this marriage, Abdullah bin Mohammad.

It is assumed that Ibn Saud remained in love with Hassa bint Ahmed, and therefore, forced his half-brother to divorce her so that he could remarry her. Hassa bint Ahmed and King Abdulaziz remained married until the latter's death in 1953.

Hassa bint Ahmed and King Abdulaziz had eleven children, seven of whom are sons. No other spouse of King Abdulaziz produced more sons than Hassa Al Sudairi. Hassa bint Ahmed became the most valued spouse of King Abdulaziz due to being mother of seven sons. Because in Arab culture, the most prominent wife is one who gives birth the largest number of sons. Therefore, Hassa had the advantage of being a "Mother of Boys."

Their sons are known as the Sudairi Seven(Arabic: عائلةالسديري‎). They were also called the "magnificent seven."
