Chapter 1

I ran along the platform, a headless chicken amongst the throng of pen bound roosters. Any other context, more than a few eyebrows would be raised as I clambered, jostled, pushed. . . .But this was Clapham Junction station, reputedly the busiest station in the Uk. ‘’KHALEDDDDDDDD’’, I screamed as I sighted a familiar black jacket. I ignored the disapproving stares.’’KHALEDDDDDDD’’, I screamed again. Black jacket turned his head along with those around him. What had looked like the light mixed race hue turned out to be full white.

‘’Bleep’’, I cursed out loud.

I was still three platforms away and the train had probably arrived. How was I so sure anyway he was about to commit the dastardly deed. All the text message had said was, ‘d 5.40 2 Isleworth’. He could have sent it to me in error, although his phone had been switched off when I called him back. But who was I kidding. This was the day of reckoning, my worst suspicions confirmed.

‘’I know he wants me to stop him’’, I said to myself. A thought at once heartening as much as it was scary. It was a testament to the bond we had shared the past year. But it was also a testament I guess to a longing. This city could be really harsh especially for people of my naturally introverted disposition. The loneliness insipid at first soon mushrooms into thoughts of the morbid and macabre. This wasn’t simply about saving Khaled or the people that would go with him. I was also desperately trying to save myself.
