EPISODE 1

WHAT IS CHEMISTRY?

CHEMISTRY as the name implies, is the HISTORY OF CHEMICALS.
History in the FRENCH LANGUAGE is called 'HISTOIRE' pronounced /'Histwa:/

Histoire means tales, story, history, etc. So, we can say, CHEMISTRY is the story or tales of CHEMICALS.

I.e CHEM + HISTORY= CHEMISTRY

First of all, we must know how CHEMICALS COME INTO BEING. Human being began to see Chemicals as if they are living beings. Yes, truly, Chemicals are living things. Human being began with observing the behaviour of Chemicals.
They discovered that a particular Chemical appears and disappears. If they are not living things, how can they be appearing and disappearing like that? Human being wanted to know by all means. They did hypothesis, formed theories and laws, and at the end of the day, they found out a lot of things.

John DALTON was the man who first successfully began the tales(by moonlight).

So then, Dalton began to tell us his stories about Chemical substances.

Episode 2 will shoot John Dalton's story for us to watch.

Question

1. What is CHEMISTRY?
2. What did Scientists do in order to study some Chemical Substances?
3. Who was the earliest of the scientists to come up with a story?
4. What is the pronunciation of the word 'HISTOIRE?'
5. What does the word in 4 above means in the English Language?
6. If a solid chemical disappears what is the name of the process called?

CHAPTER TWO:

WHAT REALLY MATTERS?

A time came that an argument arose within the scientists. They began to say that it is useless to study CHEMICALS because Chemical does not matter at all.
Some scientists disagreed with such postulate. They said that Chemical matters. To prove to the world that Chemical matters indeed, they have to find a way of defining the word Matter itself.
Eventually, they came up with one which states that, "Anything that matters is matter and anything that does not matter is not matter'

A problem surfaced immediately after that. The problem was in form of a question: WHAT MATTERS?

If you don't know what matters, how will you know what matter is?

Unanimously after years of thorough researches and experiments, scientists made known that only things that has mass(weight) and can occupy space is what matter. Therefore, if something does not have weight and does not occupy space, it doesn't matter at all.
So, with that, scientist came up with the definition of MATTER as ANYTHING THAT HAS WEIGHT OR MASS AND CAN OCCUPY SPACE.

Questions

1. What really matters?
2. What we say and speak, do they matter at all?
3. Does this teaching matters?
4. Why did the scientists feel that Chemicals did not matter?
5. What is Matter?
6. Why do you think Oxygen is a matter?
7. How will you carry out an experiment to show that your speech really matters?
8. A smile or a frown, which one do you think matters most?
9. Which organ of your body matters most?

CHAPTER THREE

FURTHER PROOF TO SHOW THAT CHEMICALS MATTER

Scientists soon discovered through, hypothesis, experiments and existing theories, that Chemicals really mattered to them and to the universe.
They found out that the Chemical called OZONE, O3 has formed a layer in the sky to prevent harmful rays from the sun from reaching us directly.
They also found out that everything in the universe was made of Chemicals: The petroleum we refine to get kerosene, petrol, diesel; the drugs we take; the food we eat;
The drinks we take in; the bags we carry; just about everything. So Amazing!!!

So, if nothing matters, CHEMICALS SHOULD MATTER. AND OF COURSE, THEY MATTER IN THIS MATTER.

therefore, the idea that Chemical was a matter was made more concrete by this discovery.

Now, if Chemical really matters, isn't it good for us to study study what matter itself is made up of?

That story will be told in the next chapter.

Questions

1. Chemicals are very useful to life, does that really matter to humans?
2. Which gas layer helps to protect human from harmful rays from the sun?
3. Mention four uses of Chemicals to humans, including being used in FOOD INDUSTRY.
4. What do you think MATTER is made up of? kiss]

Chapter Four

Composition Of Matter

With all the matters scientists have in those days, they began to invent more and more matters until they eventually invented the one that really mattered in the matter of finding up what matter is made up of.

At first, they discovered one very tiny thing inside all the matters they carried out experiments on.
This particle was so tiny that ordinary microscope could not even observe it. They have to make use of very powerful microscope before they could observe it. In the end, they came up with it.
It was so tiny that they didn't have any name as tiny as it appears to call it. Therefore they had to call it ATOM, because atom means something very very small.

John Dalton discovered that atom was very very small. Therefore, he believed that ATOM was never made up of any other smaller particles.
So, he said that ATOM IS THE SMALLEST INDIVISBLE PARTICLE OF ANY SUBSTANCE.

Scientists discovered that Atoms cannot exist alone. They are always very many. In fact, Mr Avogadro discovered that when you take a very minute sample of a substance, it will contain 6.03×1023 atoms. So big!
That quantity is called AVOGADRO NUMBER.

However, John Dalton's belief and theories about atoms were soon attacked, but not too soon: Next Chapter will tell us how JOHN DALTON'S ATOMIC THEORY WAS ATTACKED.

Question
1. Why can't atom be seen with naked eyes?
2. A powerful microscope was used to discover atom, why?
3. Which do you think is smaller, atom or micro-organisms?
4. If 6.03×1023 atoms can be residing in just one mole of a substance, how many bacteria do you think is inside a spoilt eba?
5. What do you think was wrong with John Dalton's belief about the notion that atom is not made up of anything?
6. Many little drops of water makes a mighty ocean, how does this relate with atoms forming big matters?
7. Little things and big things, which one matters most, since it is little things that make up big things?
8. What is the full meaning of the website www.ebiag.com?

CHAPTER FIVE

IS ATOM NOT REALLY MADE UP OF NOTHING?

If many atoms combine to form matter, then it means that atom itself is a matter. And to say that atom isn't made up of something means that atom is nothing itself. Now if atom is nothing, then it means MATTER ITSELF IS NOTHING. THEN IF MATTER IS NOTHING, IT MEANS CHEMICALS ARE NOTHING, AND ALL THE STORIES OF CHEMISTRY WE HAVE BEEN TELLING ARE MERE FABLES.

But no, NOTHING+ NOTHING+ NOTHING+...NOTHING can never give us something. Therefore it means that ATOM must be made up of something.

What makes up an atom? John Dalton already concluded that atom is the smallest particle and indivisible, but eventually, with the aid of a more powerful microscope, it was discovered that ATOM IS COMPOSED OF "PROTONS" "NEUTRONS" AND "ELECTRONS"

You can remember what atom is made up of if you know the word PEN= PROTON, ELECTRON, NEUTRON...
