A one day political engagement organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in collaboration with the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) was this afternoon disrupted by angry Nigerian workers who stormed Yar'dua Center, Abuja, venue of the event to register their anger over the delay of the out-going President of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwahid Omar to refund them of their equity contribution towards a failed Kriston Lally/NLC mass housing scheme. Yar' dua Center was a cacophony of confusion as police officers deployed to arrest the situation tried in vain to calm the angry workers. As at the time of filling this report, dignitries and members of political parties that convened for thje meeting have all left the venue of the meeting. Nigerian workers are demanding refund of their equity contributions for a failed Kriston Lally/NLC housing scheme. About two years ago, the Nigerian Labour Congress entered into a partnership with a private developer, Kriston Lally to provide affordable housing for Nigerian workers. But more than two years after thousands of Nigerian workers subscribed to the scheme, NLC President Comrade Omar Abdulwahid has come out to say that the private developer is a fraud and therefore the partnership with the private developer would no longer continue. There have been accusations and counter accusations between between NLC and the private developer, Kriston Lally. More than 4 billion naira was realized from subscriptions by Nigerian workers.
It may be recalled that a mass protest by these workers took place at the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC on Tuesday January 27, 2015 to begin a series of mass action aimed at compelling the NLC President to refund workers their equity contributions for the failed mass housing scheme. For over six months now, these workers have been demanding refund of their money. NLC President, Comrade Omar Abdulwahid who is at the center of this perceived fraud against the Nigerian workers has refused to come and address Nigerian workers who besieged the NLC National Secretariat this morning before proceeding to Yar' dua Center to disrupt the event organized by NLC. From the way things are going, the President may not be willing to listen to the angry workers as he will be leaving office as President of NLC by next week.

This is the kind of story one hears in a society where the common man has nowhere to run to. Protests have been going on in Abuja and no one cares to ask what is going on. People are being defrauded in broad day light and nothing happens. The NLC President is being accused by the people he claims to protect, yet he is going about organizing political events. Tomorrow, he will come out to run for governorship position in his state and probably win. Next moment he becomes our President and begins to swim in corruption and we will start wondering. People deserve the kind of leaders they have truly. What a country we live in.
