Can anyone recommend a laptop that has a long battery life.

Minimum of 2 1/2 hours. Heard Sony and Dell are good.

A 6 cell battery usually would fit into your needs. Not neccessarily a particular brand name.

my dell latitude d531 does 8hrs max.

wats d max no. of hrs 4 a 6 cell batry? cos i tink d batry 4 my hp laptop is 6 cell but lasts about 2hrs

lol, pends on the brand, my HP has 12cells and my batt live is 4.30-5 hrs at least(even with films ) that sed it u're looking at normal batteries u can get a dell or an IBM or jst get anyone with a high capacity 6 cell thats 3 hrs sha!

Technically, it is not the laptop itself that determines the battery life,but the battery cells. Practically, though battery depreciates with time, maintenance, proper use and care increases its life span.
Personally, I have a HP laptop that I bought brand new and is less than a year, yet, its battery after direct electricity is gone is less than three minutes, I believe the battery must have gone through some abnormal conditions at some time, though.
Go for a 8-cell or 12-cell battery, that should satisfy your needs.

battery life depends what you running, battery capacity and volt. battery energy mainly spent on display brightness,  so most netbooks battery life perform better than the laptop. usually 6-cell battery 2-3 hours, 9-cell battery 3.5-4 hours, 12-cell battery up to 6 hours.
Best way is looking a high capacity battery even a external battery. or get more batteries.
