When news of Muna Obiekwe's death - may his soul rest in peace - trickled in, it left most of us shell-shocked (at least those of us who never knew of his health condition were).

It took some days before I found out that he (unfortunately) was a heavy drinker and smoker.

They said he died of kidney failure... That was/is bad news.

However, this unsavory event brought to my remembrance an article I'd read a long time ago. It was an article on Toxins; very dangerous chemicals and poison we ingest into our system on a daily basis. I discovered that toxins are something we are MOSTLY unaware of, and that over time they build up and find a way of accumulating in our cells, blood and important body organs e.g the liver, colon, kidney and lymphatic system. They remain stored up for a very long time and subsequently result in all kinds of health problems.

Problems, ranging from (the mild) constant headaches to liver/kidney failure (chronic cases).

Below is an article I wrote on my facebook page. And I have decided to share it here, because many people are ignorant
of this deadly silent killer.

******************************************************************************************
If you live in a city, have a desk job (and a stressful one at that), drive an hour at least each day,
and don’t do exercise, then you probably are forcing your liver to do extra work trying to eliminate
all that excess of toxins.

Why is my body full of toxins?

Toxins are generated from several sources.
The most obvious one is the pollution in the air that we breathe in big cities.
We also get toxins from all the chemicals that are in our food, specially junk
food or food that has been processed to the point that it loses its nutritional value.
Some of these chemicals are preservatives and colorants in canned food.
Also, when we stress, we add our own toxins to the mix.

In order to cleanse our body from these toxins, a detox menu is recommended.

Why should You consider a detox menu?

A detox menu will get rid of those toxins in your body.
You will feel healthier and more energetic when you follow one.
In addition, you will make your liver’s work much easier, since the liver is the organ
that takes care of the natural detoxification of your body. This will greatly reducing the
risk of a serious liver failure or liver disease in the future.

What does a detox menu consist of?

While a detox menu varies from one health specialist to another, there are several common items to most.

First of all, a common request is the prohibition of alcohol.
Alcohol is very hard for our liver to get rid of. If taken in large quantities
for a long period of time, it may start accumulating scar tissue on the
liver, which will result in cirrhosis, a failure of the liver.

Another thing that is taken out of the picture by a good detox menu is meat,
and specially read meat. Red meat is also a difficult thing to handle for our
liver, although not as hard as alcohol.

Consuming raw foods is also common in some diets; actually this is the main focus of a detox diet.
The reason that this is requested by a detox menu is that processed foods contain a lot of chemicals
that aren’t natural and may rest in our bodies.

In addition, the most common denominator of any detox menu is drinking water; lots of it.
Water is not only the most natural of substances, but it’s the medium through which our natural
detoxification system works. It allows us to eliminate toxins naturally, and it’s the most important
component of our bodies.

One pertinent question you may be asking now, is "how do I prevent these toxins from getting into my body"?

Basically, abstaining from all forms of junk food like chocolate, soft drinks, fats & oil etc. as well as other stuffs
like cigarettes and alcohol.

But a detox diet is more recommended as it will help eject these harmful toxins and cleanse your system better.

What Are The Benefits of a Detox Diet?

There are many different types of detox diets that are geared towards helping
specific body systems. You can even do a total body cleanse that will clean your
several bodily systems at once. The benefits of a detox diet are numerous:

• Improved concentration
• Increased clarity
• Improved digestion
• Clearer skin
• Regular bowel movements
• Increased energy
Etc....

What Kinds of Food Are Included In A Detox Diet?
A detox diet is mostly comprised of vegetables and fruits.
Fish can also be included in a detox diet, as well as some herbs.

Detoxing your system
for improved health does not have to be difficult. It just involves knowing which
foods and herbs to take to affect specific body systems. You can easily cleanse your
body of dangerous toxins with common foods and herbs that you can find at your local
supermarket and health food store.
