As I called this mecho and we got talking, this is my discussion with kazeem

Kazeem: why didn't you buy mobile xhp
Me: the rating for my car is far expensive than MRS
Kazeem: tells me it only cost 3k to 4k for 5L
Me: I bought this one at 7k for 5L and that's the recommended oil by the manufacturer
Kazeem: hissed, we use the mobile in all cars that are brought here
Me: but the manufacturer said I shud use 5w30 so why shud I use 20w50 (me pointing at engine oil cap for inscription)
Kazeem: they don't know what they are doing that rating is for their weather over there.
Me: (thinking inside) chai mr siena said u would say that. Ok kazeem do you know there are some countries hotter than naija so the manufactuere takes into consideration different areas before recommending something
Kazzem: no they only gave that rating for their weather over there.
Me: ok fine, so this my car where did it come from and what's their weather like
Kazeem: laughs and says its from over seas and their weather is different
So one thing led to another and we started talking about thermostat.

Me: my engine is very old and if I switch on the ac you won't even know unless you check the fan or the ac component clicks
Kazeem: you suppose remove thermostat and let rewire work the fan direct
Me: I was just laughing we discussed this in car talk and they said you would say that.

Well inorder not to bore you guys, kazeem was of the opinion that the temp guage of my car wasn't suppose to reach optimum that it shouldn't even move pass quarter mark I explained to him why it shud reach optimum and the work of the thermostat to allow coolant pass when optimum temp is been exceeded and to stop coolant when temp dropping below optimum also the fan shud only come on to assist the coolant in reducing heat not working all the time but kazeem was adamant that because of traffic in naija, over heating may set in I was just laughing throughout and kazeem rounded up by saying if it was a womans car he was working on, he would remove the thermostat without her consent I stopped laughing and bade him goodbye.

Lol. All these kazeems on the street.

I remember going to my mechanic when check engine light started showing on my dash. He said it was normal to show that the engine was working. I just shook my head.

All this quack mechanic and owners when you tell them that the CEL means your car needs urgent attention, they just tell you that's how the manufacturer made it and it doesn't mean anything but that's the beauty of the japanese cars if you try that with a german machine you may end up selling it for scrap.

I had a similar experience, which went thus:

A friend of mine bought a 2004 Toyota Highlander and was to go in for the first oil change. He came to me with the car to discuss choice of oil for "his machine" (according to him), so I simply looked at the oil refill cap and showed him that 5w30 is the recommended oil for his car. What was written on the cap was API..., SN..., 5w30..., etc, so I advised him to buy any 5w30 rated oil and he left.

Days later, he called me while I was away in Port Harcourt that he couldn't get the oil in the town we reside so I should help him buy it from PH. I agreed and went about looking for the oil, only for him to call me and say I shouldn't worry again and naturally, I asked why. He said Kazeem told him he is an experienced mecho for over 15years and that he (Kazeem) knows the Highlander more than Toyota and as such my friend should use any oil that SN is written on it, no matter the weight and as such, he is going to buy Mobil xhp, which is rated 20w50 based on Kazeem's recommendations. I laughed it off and wished him good luck.

For the second oil change, I was surprised when he insisted on going with the manufacturer's recommendations. When I asked why? He was like how can an illiterate (Kazeem) tell him (an educated person) that he (Kazeem) knows highlander better than Toyota and is giving him his own recommendations for a vehicle he barely knew why they made it. He was also like, the manufacturer would not waste their time, money and resources to print a recommendation on the oil refill cap if they (Toyota) don't know it is important for smooth running and operation of the vehicle.

I'm tired of having to always explain to the Kazeems that the 'oyibos' who made the car are way smarter than you the graduate quack apprentice of another quack 'oga'.

When I tell Kazeem that the Nigerian temperature is nothing compared to certain oyibo temperatures they don't believe.

The thermostat must be removed! The fan must be relayed to run with the ignition! "Ah oga, your car go do over-heating o. This our weather no be like their own over there"

I remembered the day I told a radiator Kazeem that running the fan directly will increase fuel consumption. Without even asking for explanations he laughed so hard, I couldn't miss the sneer. He called on the other Kazeems to come have a good laugh too.

Well, we thank Kazeem for upping the sales at Ladipo.

Do Jumia or Konga and you are good. On the other hand just google 5w30 in Nigeria and you will get a list of stores near you. Thanks for thanking me in advance. Lol.
