ibadanfinest: Exactly my thoughts....what's now the essence of merit...if a department places her cutoff mark as 60 and the students who scored from 60 above were not up to the needed number of students.. then those who scored 59 should be next to look out for.... but what do you expect... we are in Nigeria...that's why people like kelan would come here to defend what is bad with the tag of resources..... 1 Like |

adebayooye: I just told you that about 90% is by merit, the rest is for other criteria. 100% cannot be by merit. it not possible. Even you dont base your decision 100% on merit. Now, whether you like it or not that is how its been done everywhere, even in US and Canada schools. there is less cut-off for europeans than third world countries. Guy, even you do the same thing in your house and workplace. there is a reason why there is catchment areas, less educational areas, all these are other criteria am talking about. e.g a Unilag graduate will be very favored in these admissions, why, its son of the soil. do you know, marks are allocated for just being a graduate of Unilag? success is not by merit ONLY, otherwise some people would not be your governor talkless president what about the Prof that works for Dangote as drivers? until you start to hone your social skils and knows that merit has its place and other skills has their place too. as you siad if 60 is cut-off the next set is 59. if its that straight we wont be here discussing it. that guy that scored 59 as soon as he didnt make the cut-off mark, he is equal to the guy that scored 40. until you start seeing it that way, you wont fight for a place. have you ever wondered why grades are fix like this? A- 70 and above B- 60-69 C- 50-59 D- 45-49 E- 40-44 F- 0-39 dont you think its unfair and CORRUPTION for someone that scored ZERO to have same marks with someone that scored 39? or someone that scored 70 to have same marks with 99? academically 0 & 39 are the same grade. its not bad, or corruption, its called grading system. likewise, if you dont meet the school cut-off whether 59 or 40 for example you are the same. so who gets admission depend on who wants it more. why some people sits at home crying and bemoaning their destiny others start reaching out to people who can help them now, most times is without money for your information. Nobody owes you anything, you must at all times strive to be excellent, but if you cant get first class and you got 2:1 or 2:2 you should deploy other resources/skills to help you compete. dont forget exams are not the true test of knowledge and abilities. becos you score 60 and i score 52 dont mean you are more brilliant than I am. many things could have led to my performance on exam day, which on normal day, I will do better. that is life for you. 6 Likes 1 Share |
