Although, I am nowhere close to being a parent myself, I've always talked to parents, out of concern about the dangers of televisions in their homes. We complain daily of rising cases of violent reactions, the death of the reading habit and the loss of moral values in our children but one thing we might never realise, is not that the television has contributed to our children's problems, but how much it has contributed to them.

Most of the parents I have approached have always sat me down for longer session of counter-lectures after my own lecture to tell me about the television's significant advantages . Yes, the television has it's significant advantages accompanied with a lot of it's glaringly beastly disadvantages. But the questions that remain are if our children really are getting more of it's fortunes than misfortunes and if our children are getting any of it's fortunes at all?

What The Televisions Show:

I decided to limit down my list of what the televisions show to just the 4 most common which will be: movies, music videos, news & interviews and talk shows.

The Overwhelming Misfortunes:

In almost every house I have been and found the kids watching the TV, (with parents, sometimes) I have always found them watching the misfortune-laden share of what the TV offers.

Here, I'll implore you to try an experiment. Go to people's homes when their kids are watching the TV and try to notice what they watch. If your result will match mine, music videos and movies will top your list.

Saying 'Music video' is another way of saying pornogrraphy. The rise of the brodcasting of music videos, to me is a way of bringing pornography right into our eyes as these videos convey(most often) the two most outstanding of the crux of pornography's message; indecency and the demeaning of the female-folk

Here, I will like you to carry out another needed experiment. Turn on your TV set at 12pm. Record the number of stations showing music videos. If your results match mine, the stations are way more than half. Infact, one can say these days from the irritating regularity of these videos on the TV, that the main source of income for TV stations are these videos.

Talking about movies, it's nice we do a bit of classification here. Let's classify first into local and foreign movies. The 'foreign movie' further branches mainly into Hollywood, Korean movies and Telemundo.

The local movies are nothing to write home about. They are often not in any bit beneficial and most times are strong destroying blocks to the religious beliefs we teach to our children as Muslims or Christians.

The Holloywood and Korean movies I have watched either have strong chances to trigger violent behaviours in our kids or strong chances to trigger immoral behaviours.

To Telemundos, apart from them being a total waste of time as the messages they pass are never in any bit beneficial, they have a mild chance of taking our kids a bit far-away from the realities of life and love, especially the female of them.

The Fortunes

Yes, the news is great and talk shows too. Interviews are awesome and documentary movies too. Yeah, I know, but still don't buy that TV because your kids don't love to watch them.

If you leave your kid to the TV, he'd rather watch the misfortune-laden part of the TV(which is 80% of what the TV shows). Sorry, but your kid's mind is programmed to work that way.

Well, I have advised you not to but a TV because I want to make things easy for you. There is actually a way that you can have a TV and you children will get the fortune part of it only. (That's if you know the fortune part yourself).

And that way is close monitoring. Close monitoring of what your children watch, why they watch and when they watch.

Don't Buy That TV And Let A Miracle Happen:

Yeah, it's something you've been dreaming for to happen to your kids for a long time. Deprive them of that TV and watch it happen - miraculously.

Read this poem to know what. It is the funniest poem I have read in my life and the most striking ever too. It is Television by Roald Dahl

I have put it in green bold ink because it is a very good poem for your health. smiley

I have said it over and over again, television is the cause of many problems.

Apart from the fact that it promotes all sort of wrong values, it causes concentration problems in kids, learning difficulties and obesity.

If you "must" let your kids watch TV, reduce it to a minimum of 30 minutes for toddlers and not more than an hour for older kids.

Some people deny to believe how harmful the influence of television can be because it is comfortable to place your kids in front of the TV, a cheap babysitter.

You have a point there, but equally deadly to our 'tradition' is every aspect of technology. The world is changing and the worst we can do is to cling to the hopelessly distant past. It would only drive our wards far away from us once they discover the 'reality'.
What we should do? Play our part by instilling family values and advice to them as much as they need them and still, let them learn on their own. They may never forgive you for putting them behind the world

Sincerely, I wish parents, especially Nigerian parents will start to understand this. If not for time, I would make that write-up much more factual and organised. It might do something. embarassed

YAWN

This is what happens when parents do not know the ratings system (PG13) and are too lazy to supervise/monitor children.

TV is not the problem. Lazy parents are. I as a child couldn't watch late night tv and also had few hours to watch tv or play videogame. It was either I watched cartoons. news or football. Only when I became older that we were allowed to watch other stuff.

If TV is bad for children, what about the internet? The internet would be evil then.

But parental locks and software exist for a reason.

This cool, like when my uncle don't use to allow me watch tv back then, not knowing he was helping, i hate the dude back then, because he deprive me from watching tv, but the most worst part of this tv thing is that, is not about the kids, is about the parents, because i've notice, educated family normally base on watching movies, like news, gospel music, because they know the disavanguage surrounding, but non educated family or parents, watches whatever comes to em as a point of view, whether wrong or right, porn films, have eventually taken most parents heart, which even makes em own some dvd at home, now tell me why the children won't get corrupt, and also, i don't have much to say, but as technology is everywhere, the world will never change, upon generation, our kids, needs our help, though am not a parent but gonna be someday... Thanks for this thread op.

It's not even TV any more, but the addiction to the internet and these new age devices. Take away these things from today's kids and you would see how restless they become. It even affects adults.

I won't fully agree with you. Well, some TV programmes nowadays are something else and that is why we have parental locks. There are some TV channels and programmes that are specially for children. Educational programmes, news, religious programs, cartoons, traditional movies and christian movies are good and educative to children. Parents too should be mindful of the programmes they watch while the children are around. Parents can even educate their children while watching a movie with them by pointing to the wrongs and right. Even in classes, e.g. Computer teacher are like, 'the monitor looks like the TV'. It creates an imagination in the children. How would children who had never seen TV have a perception of that imagination?
