It’s no longer news that employers spend between 15 to 30 seconds to look through each CV. One vital area that puts them off easily is seeing CVs with high number of pages.

What Is The Common Length Of A CV?

There are no absolute rules though but, in general, a new graduate’s CV should cover not more than two sides of A4 paper (2 pages). CVs in the US tend to be shorter i.e. a page while in the UK 2-page CV still dominates for graduates. As employers are getting more and more CVs, they tend to reduce the time spent on perusing CVs. In Nigeria, an applicant's CV ought not to exceed 2 pages. If you can summarize your career history comfortably, this is fine and has advantages. However, academic and technical CVs may be much longer i.e. up to 4 or 5 pages.

How To Cut Your CV Down Or Reduce The Number Of Pages

• Change your margins. In MS Word, go to Page Layout /Margins/ Narrow – this will set your margins to 1.27cm.

• Change the body font to Calibri in 11 pts size. Calibri is a modern font which has been designed for clarity on a computer screen.

• Use bullets for content (job responsibilities), rather than long paragraphs of text.

• Set line spacing to single.

• Referees/References, state of origin, religion, etc are no longer essential for modern day CVs. They’ll be useful in subsequent job stages.

If after all these tricks you are still on three or more pages, you have to be ruthless with your content by reading every single word and remove those that don’t add value to your CV.

If you need the template in MS Word (editable) format to use to rewrite your CV yourself, request for it by sending a mail using 'Template' as the subject of your mail to exceptionalcvbox@gmail.com

If you'll like me to do the editing for you, just send me your current CV as an attachment to the same email address above. Use 'Edit My CV' as the subject of your mail.
