I have always been telling people that nigeria is the best and easiest place to make money. Outsiders sees the opportunities and they keep rushing to nigeria but nigerians don't and can't see the abundant opportunities surrounding them. They keep complaining day and night and keep insulting gej instead of sitting down and thinking of how to tap into the limitles business opportunites at their fingertips .

No doubt Nigeria is one of the easiest place to make money, but the question would be, how, where, do you achieve that, when you perhaps will be experiencing unfavourable economic policies, most developed countries in the world today attracts investors becos they probably have strong government policies in place that will protect their investment, but in Nigeria is it so?

bros ,the situation creates the opportunities. Forget the government, nigeria is one of the most liberal places to do business without anybody disturbing u. Nigeria is a place u are the lord of ur services and product, no customer protection, u determine everything. Nigeria is the biggest market in africa, we are talking about 170million people crowded up in a land mass!!!!! All what young entrepreneurs need to do is think and bring out a product or service that even 200 or 500 out of 170 million will patronize and the idea and product will grow its own market geometric ally . Let me just stop here, but I know in 10years time those shouting and abusing gej will look back and wish they have siezed the opportunities starring them in the face now.

That isn't what the article says, it says union bank succeeded barclay's. And not transformed into it

From the Bank's website:

[b]Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. has been in existence for almost a century withroots that can be traced to 1917 when Colonial Bank was founded. Colonial Bank was acquired by Barclays Bank in 1925 and this resulted in the change of name to Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas or Barclays Bank (DCO)). In 1969, Barclays Bank (DCO) was incorporated as Barclays Bank of Nigeria Limited, to satisfy criteria set by banking laws decreed in 1968.

In 1971, the bank’s shares were floated on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and 8.3% of the shares were offered to Nigerians. In 1972, the Federal Government of Nigeria bought 51.67% of the bank’s shares leaving Barclays Bank Plc. with 40% ownership. In 1979, Barclays Bank Plc. sold its 40% share to Nigerian citizens and businesses. These changes in ownership were done to satisfy the conditions stipulated by the Enterprise Promotion Acts of 1972 and 1979.
To illustrate the changes in its ownership structure, the bank changed its name to the “Union Bank of Nigeria Plc.”
For the first time in Nigeria's history, a true Nigerian bank, was born. In 1993, the Federal Government of Nigeria completely divested its ownership of the bank’s holdings to Nigerians. Thus, Union Bank became one of the first, publicly owned banks in Nigeria, as it was owned completely by Nigerian individuals and organisations.

However, the bank was forced to withdraw following the Indigenisation Decree promulgated by the Nigerian military regime in the 1970s in protest against Britain’s refusal to sanction the apartheid regime in South Africa.

We need more commercial banks and not investment banks.
Its such a shame that we have only about 20 banks when other countries have hundreds of financially and commercially active and strong banks that support the economy.

We need about 20 more commercial banks in Nigeria to boost our financial system. Barclays should go to hell with interests

Nigeria have more than 20 banks. Can you count how many community banks we have? Or are Community Banks not banks?

They do help the economy. Their customers is not limited to high net worth individuals. They also service companies.

Barclays Bank changed name to Union Bank and Standard Bank to First bank after the indigenization decree. So, yes Union Bank was Barclays Bank.
