Liverpool begin their Europa League campaign
against Besiktas on Thursday night, after
failing to qualify from the group stages of this
season's Champions League.
The Reds drew against Basel in their final
group match in December, resigning them to
third in Group B and a place in the Europa
League knockout stages.
Liverpool won just one of their six group
matches in the Champions League - a narrow
victory over Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets -
while Thursday's opponents Besiktas go into
the game off the back of an impressive group
stage campaign in the Europa League.
Slaven Bilic's side are without a loss in this
season's competition, including a win and a
draw against Spurs, and also top the Turkish
Super Lig, one point ahead of Fenerbahce.
Despite this, Besiktas will be well aware of the
result when the two sides last met; Liverpool
ran out 8-0 winners at Anfield in the 2007/08
Champions League.
Demba Ba is set to lead the line for Bilic's
side in his first appearance at Anfield since
scoring for Chelsea at the end of last season.
Ba left the Blues in the summer, but his goal
against Liverpool after Steven Gerrard's slip
all-but-ended the Reds' hopes of winning the
Premier League.
Team news
Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling faces a late
fitness test on a foot problem ahead of the
Europa League visit of Besiktas.
Winger Lazar Markovic begins a four-match
ban for his sending off in his last European
outing, while midfielder Lucas Leiva is
sidelined with a thigh problem.
Captain Steven Gerrard is still not fit to return
from a hamstring injury.
Besiktas will be without Ismail Koybasi (knee),
Alexander Milosevic (foot) and goalkeeper
Tolga Zengin (knee), who are all injured.
Other than that, Bilic has a full complement of
players to choose from, for the visit to Anfield.
Stats
Liverpool beat Besiktas 8-0 the last time they
met, in the Champions League in 2007/08.
The Reds have won their last three matches
against Turkish opposition, scoring 11 and
conceding just one in those games.
The Reds have won none of their last five
games in European competition (D2 L3),
though these were all in this season’s
Champions League.
Besiktas have already played four matches
against English sides this season, losing on
aggregate to Arsenal in the Champions
League qualifiers and winning and drawing
against Tottenham in the Europa League (W1
D2 L1).
Including qualifiers, Besiktas’ record against
English clubs in Europe reads P18 W5 D5 L8.
Demba Ba scored five and assisted one more
in his four appearances in the group stage.
