You must not be an artist to be a 3D animator but it will be an advantage as most artist which I believe you mean a sculptor/painter will be good in modelling in 3D animation and you must specialize in yourself in one area like Animation (making the movement) or Modelling (creating characters or object) there are so many area which you might have the experience but not the expert, like lighting, etc
