Honestly bro My parents didnt teach me and ma teachers only taught me Biology and the reproductive system. I learnt mostly frm friends which isn't good too. Gettn parents to be more open and teach their children sex education should be d aim. Being conservative doesnt stop your kids frm having sex.
deltateam:

Your parents taught you that? Mine didn't teach me nada. Naija parents are conservative.

Its easier to lay a girl abroad than in naija where shakara too much.

And the rate of rape, child abuse will skyrocket. News would be like "Teacher experiments sexual reproduction on students"
I guess that will be a problem. Getting trustworthy teachers in this nigeria that even religious leaders abuse young girls.

person wen wan spoil go spoil, its nt by teaching sex education; although it wil reduse d high level of students engaging in sexual activities. Most of these students r aware of d effects of unprotected sex bt they dnt care because sex is too sweet to be ignored

Hell no!!! Charity begins at home. It will still remain the duty of the parent, whose words are taken more seriously with fear, and in anycase are'nt moral disciplines been taught in religious studies? what i advice is a call for strong/more stringent approach on children from parents at home and religious teachers at schools.

Yeap but dat doesnt mean we shuld give Schools dat responsibility. I think it'll result to more damage, teenagers will now confide more in their teachers about their sexual lifes which is not gud at all.
Well u have a point. Its an open thread and one can be for or against.

D truth is dt it is bein taught in subjs like home econs basic science nd in higher clases biology p.h.e home mangment. So making it a sch subj wont make any diff.
Parents shud monitor their children, see 2 what dey watch on tv and pray for their children.

As to d first part, I must say I wasn't taught that in any of d subjects in my primary skul. And yes parents have more responsibility of monitoring their children.

Sexual health is a public health issue, it isn't just the actors who are potentially impacted but any children that they may have.

Ignorance of sex and the dangers of reckless/premature sexual activity is not a positive.

Ignorance is not 'bliss' just delayed anger and frustration.

Re: Should Sex Education Be Taught As A Subject In Nigerian Schools? by Nobody: 2:18pm On Mar 28, 2015
Yes it is important it shld b taught as a subject. Although it is taught in subjects such as social studies, civic education, phe etc as a topic frm basic two to five. Bt there is need for it to stand alone. If u see it hear wat pupils are doing chai u go fear. As a teacher i see alot.we are all moving for it to be included in sch curriculum.

i heard public schs av started teaching as a subject bt nt sure. Parents too see d need bt they are scared of the unknown.

With the rate at which young girls and boys being exposed at a young age, I'd like to know what Nigerians feel about the addition of sex education to the curriculum in Nigerian schools.

Personally I feel that its needed and that if it can be properly conducted, it should be added at least as one of those courses where students get to talk and pour out their minds to adults who can advise them.

The problem is just that as I've noticed that there maybe religious issues. Most parents in Nigeria adhere to religious teachings that say no sex outside or before marriage (which is something I also believe in). So there may be clashes as to the type of sexual education being taught. One parent may feel they should only be taught to abstain from sex until they are 18 while another may think they should teach the children to only have sex when they are married.

Forgive me for the long text, I just poured out what what is running through my mind.
yes it should if parents don't want to do it then outsiders should just to keep this generation on point

They don't teach it well. Different styles should be taught. Infact sexology should be intraduced as a University course.

I didn't know girls enjoy sex. See females commenting up and down. Chai una pretence na die.

It should be taught in schools, however the curriculum is already over flogged with lots of subjects. Except the thread owner is not informed, peculiar aspects of sex education is taken care of under sexuality in the health education curriculum. The question now is how many schools have qualified health education teachers and how many students offer health education?

the problem has to addressed from its roots. The family institution and then the teachers. Over here we tend to judge sexual education with a religious and moral point of view and not scientific and logically. There by spoiling the true purpose of the sexual education action. There needs to be a reform in our educational methods. But formal and informal. If we are to be see a success rate in sexual education.

Well I think both religious and scientific views shud be taken not one of the two only.

let me give u an example. At the mention of sex to a religious orientated teen. What comes into his mind is for fornication . Sin death and hell. Therefore abstain! It helps him abstain quite alright . No because of discipline but because, he has been conditioned to fear from the onset. Well that does not stop his or her urge. Stuffs like this make a lot of their category of people got through a lot of emotional torture. But they can't speak out. We need a free fair and clear understanding. Sadly the teachers we have of today can't provide that. There is really nothing to fear in sex education. It's suppose to be taught correctly
