[b]Manuel Pellegrini pointed out Manchester City's lack of experience in Europe as one of the reasons why they have not been successful in Europe. He also outlined Manchester City's lack of a Superstar as another reason of the Premier League Champions difficulties.

Pellegrini said: "I prefer not to offer reasons [for their struggles], because they sound like excuses and there's no excuse," The Guardian reported.

"When you win something, if you don't have that mentality that comes from a tradition of always winning, the built-in demands of a big club, there's always a small dip.

"Where we have most slipped is goals. This was the ideal year [to build], [but] with the financial fair play restrictions, not only could we not sign, we couldn't register players.

"To buy [Wilfried] Bony we had to leave [Stevan] Jovetic out [of their Champions League squad]. With those limitations, we strengthened defensively.

"We brought Willy Caballero to give Joe Hart competition, [Eliaquim] Mangala, who's 23 and will be an important player, Fernando because Javier Garcia wanted to go, [Bacary] Sagna because Micah Richards was always injured. What we didn't do was sign a 'crack' [superstar]."

Pellegrini added: "Well, we have [Sergio] Aguero, but the answer is yes. The way it's growing, I think this team needs a 'crack'."

Pellegrini's statement came as a surprise to me because this game is the most important game of Manchester City this season. With Chelsea six point clear and with a game in hand, it seems the English Premier League champions chance for a silverware this season lies in the Champions League.

Pellegrini's job at Manchester City look threatened after his side lost to relegation threatened Burnley on Saturday. Since reports of a possible departure of Pellegrini emerged, Txiki Bergiristian, Manchester City's technical director has not done anything to prove Pellegrini's job is not threatened.

A breakdown in relationship between Pelegrini and Kompany made headlines after reports said Pellegrini took Fernandinho's side in a row at Anfield during Manchester City's 2-1 loss to Liverpool.

Despite no words from Txiki about Pellegrini's job, Pellegrini's words seems to indicate he is staying and he might replace any player he feels is holding his side down.

His words could also seem as a rallying call to his players to show they are superstars.

We will wait and see the effect of Pellegrini's statement as Manchester City faces Barcelona at Camp Nou. Manchester City face an uphill task as they try to turn around their 2-1 defeat to Barcelona at the ETIHAD.
