Lead is a ubiquitous toxic heavy metal which is characteristically soft, highly malleable, and resistant to corrosion and possesses very low melting point (Flora et al., 2012). These unique properties of lead confers to it numerous industrial uses such as in automobiles, paint, ceramics, plastic etc. this widespread usefulness of this element has made it occur commonly within the biosystem and the environment in general (Flora et al., 2012). Because this metal is non-biodegradable, it persists in the environment hence, man easily get exposed to it through one or more of the following sources including lead paint, contaminated dust and soil, leaded gasoline, drinking water, lead- glazed ceramics, food eaten or stored in containers painted with lead-based paint or lead-containg glaze, battery recycling grids and bearing, lead smelting and coal combustion and other industrial processes (Flora et al., 2012, Lyn, 2006).

A research work by saper et al., 2004 also reveals that herbal medical products consumed in Asian and African countries contain significant amount of heavy metals including lead.
