1. There are 54 countries and one “non-self governing
territory”, the Western Sahara, in Africa.
2. Arabic is spoken by 170 million people on the
continent, followed in popularity by English (130 million),
Swahili (100), French (115), Berber (50), Hausa (50),
Portuguese (20) and Spanish (10).
3. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, with an
estimated population of 125–145 million
people. Egypt is the second most populous country with
over 76 million people.
4. The Nile River, which drains into the Mediterranean
Sea at the northeastern edge of Africa, is the longest
river in the world with a total
length of 4,132 miles (6,650 kilometers). It is formed
from the juncture of two smaller rivers:
the White Nile and the Blue Nile.
5. The Gambia has only one university.
6. Equatorial Guinea is Africa’s only spanish speaking
country.

10. A person from Botswana is called a Motswana, the

gave him 210 children between 1920 and 1970.
40. Zimbabwe is the only country in the world were
almost everyone was a billionaire at one point.

underdeveloped of all of the continents, despite its
wealth of natural resources. The average poor person in
sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to live
on just $.70 a day
