How can someone and how did you choose a good research topic?

The first thing is to get familiarized with the latest research in your field. You do this by reading research papers. Ideally, you should have been subscribed to some magazines or journals to stay current.

When you've read the latest papers( You don't have to understand them completely you just need the general idea of the problem they're trying to solve) you'll get to know what the latest unsolved problems are in your chosen field. Then you can choose one or a piece of one that interests you and focus your research on that.

Alternatively, you can just walk up to a prof and ask him for a suggestion. He can give you a subset of his own work.

This is what I remember.
