The youth may make decision on optimism that overwhelms realities but the elder will carefully look through by mixing realities with optimism.

So, discussing with an elder as a youth helps to paint a picture of the future you are yet to see, by bringing both the past and the future into the present.

In other words, the elder adds his experience to your current knowledge to help you arrive at a balanced conclusion.
