Stelvin101:Nobody is saying that there is anything wrong with being an employee. The idea of self development is to give you an edge over others so that you can get the job in the first place. There are a lot of people with the same paper qualifications but employers are looking for people who will actually get the job done. And if someone keeps working on himself even while under an employer,he can decide to be his own boss later on. |

Stelvin101: To be self employed, as long as you know what you're doing you only need an idea not money... Money would only make things easier. |

What we should take out of a degree (especially arts) is the ability to learn and think critically. Those are the skills that are needed in the workplace. The thought that the material you learn in uni will somehow be critical in your working life is unfounded, this only applies in technical fields like engineering, science etc. Even then you still do a lot of on the job learning. So learn how to learn and think critically |

eleojo23:Certificates and generally education is good. A graduate of Business Administration, Engineering, Pharmacies and Medicine should be given an enabling environment to practise what he or she has learnt at school. It is crazy to think or suggest that such person should go and become a musician, comedian etc having spend 4 or 7 years trying to get a first degree. It is the responsibility of the government to provide jobs for the citizenry. In Nigeria, the difference is the case, as successive government have failed in their duty to industrialise Nigeria. They embezzle all the funds meant for job creation. I am not saying that Nigerian graduate should not think outside the box but I am saying that leaving your professional line to go and become a Keke rider, Musician seems you wasted all your time at the university. Government should wake up to their civic duty of creating jobs for the citizenry. |

This doesn't really apply to Nigerians. The writer suggests the graduate applies to other fields rather that his specific field of study. Here in Nigeria, that is already common place. We apply for almost any opening. *in Erigga's voice*.....Oga abeg find work give us, which one be advice 1 Like |

Exactly, the OP has pinpointed, demystified and treated the obvious mediocrity and cankerworm-ravaged-intellect of young and enterprising graduates who tie down their bright future and dreams to their academic disciplines. The syndrome and cancerous though of "I am an economist and I must work as an ecconomist' should be gone with the winds. It is really a good thing to practicalise the theories of your profession. But when such opportunities fail to come and other great opportunities presents themselves, you have to rediscover yourself and you will see yourself doing what you never knew you have the extra-maximum and horse-power potentials of doing. That is my point ! You can as well be productive, creative and innovative. Start a business with a very little or no capital and start earning your daily. Living.
