I have an oppotunity to study programming from a guru who happened to be an expert at not less than 5 programming languages. He is ready to teach me any programming language for free but there is limitation to this- he said i can only pick one programming language.

please fellow programmers which one should i pick out of these five programming and why should i pick it.

1. Java

2. Javascript

3. Python

4. Php

5. Ruby

Since you are a novice,just choose PHP,learn jave and javascript yourself,then cool down and go for Python,Ruby and others tutorial you wish to learn.

There's no bad language out of them all after all. If you know you have passion for web, the fastest is PHP, if mobile apps, fastest is Java, and so on... Ruby and Python could be used for web, desktop apps, but you need extra miles before you get to that level while javascript is not good for a first start, so dump it

Even before the PHP, you have to know what HTML and CSS is all about. It will help.
